Styleside panel replacement
I want to replace the short-bed exterior panels on my 1980 F100. I've got the panels I need from a long-bed and think I can get them to fit if they're cut to the proper length with a notch cut near the edge of the box at the head of the box. I'd like to remove the existing panels and I know I'm in for a lot of work using spot weld cutters.
What I need to know is: approximately how many spot welds there are aside from those at the end of the panel by the tail-lights and how is the wheelhouse attached to the inside of the fender panel?

I don't know if box construction has changed too much since yours was new but all the trucks I've worked on have been similar. There are spot welds down the front of the box, you will need to unbolt the box from the frame and move the box back to get at them. The lip of the wheel well is also welded to the inner fender. The top of the box is also welded, these are on the inner side of the bed rails. If the box side has been replaced it may not have spot welds in all these places, there could be "glue" instead. Hope that helps and good luck with your project!
