New Toy! - 1993 f150 4x4 questions

Here is my new toy, a 93 F150 4x4. It has 291k on the body and about 150k on both the engine and transmission (which were both switched in from a 93 Bronco by the previous owner.) I bought this knowing there were some issues, but I wanted a truck that I could learn to work on while slowly making improvements.

There are a few things that I have questions about:

1. Transmission
The transmission will rev high in first gear unless you turn the overdrive off. It will then shift smoothly. Once you get into 3rd or 4th gear and you can hit the overdrive button again and it will drop into OD fine. The spedo works great up to about 55-60 mph (so it worked flawless on the test drive) but when I got on the interstate on the way home it went haywire. It was doing a 15 mph swing both directions. Possible issues? The OD light will flash but I am not sure how to read codes on this truck.

2. Fuel system
The fuel gauge does not work for the front tank, but does for the rear. The truck runs on the front tank, but sputters when I switch it to the rear. I just got the truck today so I haven't had time to fiddle with anything.

3. CEL
CEL turns on randomly without any noticeable pattern.

I'd like to keep this a running thread, because I'm sure I'll have a multitude of questions in the near future.

Here is a quick picture I snapped yesterday. I had to replace one of the rear tires as it blew out on the way home, the other three will be replaced this week.

What trans?

The CEL means there's a code to pull. Someone will post the link, there are several.

Speed going wild could be a few things. Might be the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) and that could affect the trans as well. Mine is mounted in top of rear differential.

OD light flashing means trans is asking for attention.

The trans is an E40D. I assumed that was what the flashing OD light meant. What should I do first to try to work out the issues? Filter and fluid change?

Is this the right resource for checking codes on my truck?

I'll try to get the codes today. I'll have to see if I can scrounge up a piece of wire somewhere around here (I'm in college so I don't have the resources that I would at home). Once I pull them I'll update this post.

I fixed my barber's furnace with a twist-tie (wire coated in plastic) from a loaf of bread. Don't come back and say you couldn't find a wire.

Here is what I got:

KOEO
116
636
114

CM
172
332
542
617
634

I haven't run an KOER yet, but will soon. I also uploaded a video to youtube, and if anyone is bored and needs to fill about 3 minutes feel free to check my codes.

Was it cold, weather wise, when you did the test (video not working for me)?
That would explain the 114, 116, and 636

Side winder, where was the 117 listed at?

You're supposed to warm the engine up to operating temperatures, and at a certain point in the procedure, spike the rpm's to make sure the TPS, etc is in range.

Otherwise it'll toss a couple fault codes in that are false.

As for my codes, they came from my OBD-I Ford diagnostic booklet.

It was about 45 degrees out and I didn't even crank the truck. I'll try it again and maybe some of those will go away once its warmed up.

In the mean time how should I go about attacking these codes?

He did a KOEO test, right? IIRC, the TPS test is for KOER only.

OP - I'd expect those codes about act and ect if the truck isn't warm. I get those as well.

I'd focus on the egr and hego first. Those PROBABLY didn't come from your test and were stored codes. These two items will make the truck run bad. You can also clear the codes, warm up the truck, and pull codes again to be sure you know what you're chasing.

I'll clear the codes and try running it again. If the codes come up again I'll see about changing some sensors.

For the transmission where should I start? A fluid and filter change? In the next week or so this will become a daily driver (my commute to school is only about 2.5 miles) so I'd like to get the drivetrain fixed first and foremost.

I was searching for the 332 problem on my 93 Bronco with 5.8L.. I didn't have any vacuum going to any of the solenoids (TAB,TAD, or EGR).. If you've got no vacuum to the solenoid group (right side of motor on top of manifold) then you can get the 332 error.. be gentle on checking the lines so they don't snap off on you..

Turned out to be a vacuum leak.. the old coffee reservoir had pin holes under neath near the mounting bracket.. couldn't find using the carb cleaner spray trick.. what I did to TEST was loop the connector and bypass the can with some small vac hose stuck into the molded connector (don't cut the connector).. I then had the proper vacuum back at the TAD, TAB, EGR solenoids (tested with finger..lol).. Drove around and tested it out.. still no 332 code.. ordered new factory can for $45.. and all is well 1000 miles later still..

Hope this helps..

Old can kinda popped on removal.. but you get the idea..
