Evening Fellows, I have a 1988 F350 7.3. I want to know what my options are for a tranny swap. It currently has a 3 speed in it that I would like to pull and replace. Anyone have any ideas?

 

another 3 speed c6 auto
ok and cheap to buy,but expensive to operate with these fuel prices if you drive a lot.

an older 4 speed manual
bit better than the c6 for fuel economy,but not a great deal.also cheap option.

an E40D auto
most expensive option.it is electrically controlled.would also require a standalone controller either from a latter model idi truck with an e40d or an aftermarket controller.like the c6 but has a locking converter (think; manual trans mode, to keep it basic) and over drive.


zf5 manual
the most common due to simplicity and price.a manual hd 5 speed with final gear being over drive.

^all trans options must be for the diesel specific bell housing.minus the zf5.some claim one from a 460 will work via drilling holes.im not crazy about the idea nor would it have the correct gearing more tailored for the lower rpms of the diesel imho.
