I always thought the same thing until I got a Chihuahua. She's the coolest dog I've ever had. Also, she's quite laid back for a little dog, but she definitely lets us know when someone is at the door. I'm very protective of her, too. We had a guest who thought it was funny to tell me how she thought it would be fun to 'punt' the dog. I was about a hot second from kicking her out when her boyfriend pulled her away. I was seeing red already. I don't give a **** if you like my dog or not, threatening her will likely get your *** chewed out. Attempting to hurt my dog would end up with an ***-whoopin'. She's a part of my family and I won't have anyone disrespecting her.
OTOH, I've seen dozens of Chihuahuas who were mean little bassterds, too.

Yeah, they're tough until their 'prey' turns around. I turn Nano loose on the local ducks and watch her go after them in the yard... until they turn around and chase her away. It's hilarious.

Research Study Finds Most Aggressive Dog Breeds
A study released in 2008 in the journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science provides scientific data on what breeds are statistically more aggressive – and the results go some way to readdressing the balance of these long held dog breed stereotypes.
