My next house will not have carpeting, between the previous folk's cats and now puppies in the house, there are only two rooms with carpet left. The rest was ripped out and nasty.
On a more positive note, we took a nothing left to lose stance and doubled Splotch's medication. He is now doing well enough to chew stuff up around the house, but still looks weird since he basically lost all the muscle on his head. Hopefully he will regain most of it at least, I know that particular condition can cause scarring on what's left making regrowth slow and difficult.

As was pointed out...apparently the practice has been discontinued. If it was actually ever done...it is reprehensible. Hopefully anyone practicing this was caught and prosecuted.
As shocking as it is...I don't think it's much worse than some of the things that are common practice in parts of our country.

At an obedience competition in Finland, the task was simple: Dogs were to run down a track, ignoring the treats and toys along its perimeter, reaching their young owners at the other end as fast as possible.
The first two dogs play by the rules.
The third, a golden retriever, despite approaching the starting line with all seriousness, just couldn’t help himself.
