Definitely. The 5.4L is a very torquy engine and, because it's not drive-by-wire, has a little better throttle response than the 5.0L. However, the 5.4L pretty much dies in the upper rpm range.

The 5.0L is a much better balanced engine. Plenty of torque down low, but also breaths well up high. It's a great engine and it will leave the 5.4L in its dust if you put your foot down.

 

AND ... The 5.0L is a lighter engine - 435Lbs versus 525Lbs.

I have both- sort of. I have a 2012 FX4 crew with the 5.0. Wife has an 08 Expedition with the 5.4 6 speed. Gears in the truck are 3.73 and the Expy has 3.31's so not a direct comparison per say. But I will say the characteristics are obviously different between the engines. The truck will lay blackmarks on dry roads and the Expy will not spin in the rain. Again, not a fair comparison. But, at no point in the powerbands of both engines does the 5.4 even feel like it is more powerful. May be close mid range for a few rpm. But, the 5.0 differs in that once it hits higher rpms there is an increased surge in power, where the 5.4 just seems to stop pulling. Also, the Expy downshifts on every hill that the 5.0 holds 6th and can even accelerate without downshifting. Again, may be the gears. But the wife tried to keep up getting on the interstate from about 10 mph. I punched it and the rear tires broke free. Once the 5.0 hooked up I put several lengths on the Expy by 70 mph. I know it sounds like I am downing the 5.4. Im not. The 5.4 6 speed is a great combination. If I had never driven a 5.0 I wouldn't know better. But, I would love to see the Expy get the 5.0.

 

OK to be fair the 5.4 with the six speed (09 and up) was a big jump from say your 2008 and older 5.4's. my 07 was way behind my 2010 5.4 i had and my 2012 5.0 is a jump up from that! that six speed makes a world of difference but the 5.0 is a beast!

My 2003 5.4L just doesn't do it for me anymore.

 

My '12 5.0 is way better off the line than my 5.4 was. The 5.4 in my 08 felt like it had a turbo spooling up when given the go pedal. The '08 5.4's were drive by wire also, (I had to change my TPS) and my 08 was still quicker off the line than my '02 5.4.

 

My 05 was better and quicker than my 02

My 10 is better and quicker than my 05.

My buddies 12 5.0 is quicker than my 10 (not better)


The 02 was gutless compared to the 05. The 05 was great until I drove the 10. The main reason the 10 is so good is the 6 speed tranny. If you got any f150 09-up you would be happy. It's more the transmission that is making the difference not the engine.

My idea truck would be my 5.4 with my buddies 12 tranny. Yes the 5.0 is quicker and is more like driving a mustang than a truck but when we are both hooked to trailers I prefer the lower revving characteristics of my 5.4 over his 5.0.

 

the 10 and 12 trannys are the same six speed. What are you thinking you will gain?

I own a 2011 FX4 Supercab 5.0L and I've driven my share of 5.4L's over the years...Everything from the old 2v 5.4L all the way up to the 3v 310hp ones.

There was a signifigant difference between the 2v 260hp 5.4L and the 3v 310hp 5.4L but I think it was mostly related to the 6-speed tranny vs the 4-speed in the old unit.

I can comfortably say though, Without question that the 5.0L is superior any of the 5.4L's I've driven in every way. The only 5.4L I've ever driven that I think may have given the 5.0L a good run was a friend of mine who had some work and a 5-star tune on his. He was laying down 14.5 to 15.0 1/4 miles, but it was not stock. Most 5.0L F-150's I've seen run about those times without having a tune or any work done to them. The 5.0L in my experience feel's equally as torqy in the lower/mid range as the 5.4L does...But loads more powerful in the mid/high range, and ontop of that it gets better mileage. The 5.4L's a great engine, and I've seen some that went well past 400,000 miles...I hope that the new 5.0L will share the same reliablity charcteristics of the 5.4L...But only time will tell.
