push button switch for GP's

When I turn the ignition switch to on the GP lite only stays on for one second the I turn the key to off then back to on then hope the lite stays on longer to start the engine. My assumption is that the GPC is going bad?
So I installed a push button switch between the steering column and the wiper switch. I came off a fused wire to switch then to purple wire on the GP solinoid. I did not disconnect the purple wire, I just tied into it with a circle clamp. The GP lite comes on and the engine starts quick after 3 or 4 seconds.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks nick c
