Fuel tank pickup priblem

What are the best steps for finding out if I have a fuel tank pickup problem in my 69 f100? Is there a sock type filter inside? Is it easy to get to? I'm having a fuel delivery issue at about 3 miles down road. Will idle all day. New fuel pump and filter. Also replaced all rubber hoses. Truck sputters and dies and then is difficult to start. Also replaced coil. Ugh.........

ALL 1965/72 F100/350's: In-cab fuel tank: No sock, pickup tube attaches to top of tank, routes down left side, thru floor pan...then along the left frame rail to the pump.

1967/72 F100/250 Stylesides: Optional 25 gallon factory installed auxillary fuel tank: Pickup tube part of sending unit, 3/8" I.D. plastic meshed filter screen (sock) slips onto end of tube.

You can use a vac gauge to test pump for pressure/vacuum. Use an aux tank to flow test the pump for volume.

I'd start with a simple test run it for a few minutes. Remove pressure side line at carb, route to a bottle and have someone start the engine and let idle then run up the rpms a bit 1500. Watch for good supply of fuel/pressure (finger over line) if that seems ok. Suspect the carb for issues (float/needle valve, etc..) does it have a non-ferrus filter in the carb bowl feed port ?

some thoughts

Here are a few from me:
1. Plugged fuel filter. Do you have one at the carb and maybe one on the fuel pump also? If so, check both.
2. If no filters in the system some of the insides of the old hoses might have broken away and are in the carb's fuel bowl. 2 miles down the road plugging the jet(s).
3. Do you have an aftermarket ignition system to replace the points? Does it have an "ignition module" that is hot to touch when the engine stalls?
4. Vacuum leak. Could be when choke opens a couple miles down the road there is no over-rich mixture to make up for a vacuum leak.

Thanks jeffff. Great info. Here's the update. Replaced fuel pump and all rubber hoses. Also new coil an dist cap. Fuel filter is new also. Still had the problem on test drive yesterday. 😡😡restarted quickly with shot of ether and got it home. I'm really at a loss for what to do next.

I have a 1968 F250 Ranger Camper Special someone before me put a 460 in. A couple months after I bought it I was having trouble starting it. With no fuel at the carb I assumed it was fuel pump. But it ended up being an old rubber hose had split. Did not leak fuel (!) but the fuel pump sucked air instead of fuel out of the tank. Since you changed the rubber already check the metal lines for rust, holes, splits, kinks. Then, 6 months later I had trouble again. With no spark. I had put cap, rotor, new points and condensor in it months prior. Changed coil but that wasn't it. A new distributor solved the problem but I have no clue why. Since yours starts right back up with ether I am assuming fuel problem. But here are two more things to check.
