1999-2004 Double Din Install

I will be doing a Double Din install on my 1999 soon. Radio will be in next week. I have read that the dash will have to be trimmed for it to fit. I have checked for a youtube video on the installation but have not been able to find one. Would be helpful.. Anybody seen one?

It will be obvious when you go to install it. It won't change the final appearance of.the dash once it.KS installed. Just a tiny bit around the inside of the whole. There is a small lip.

You'll probably have to trim the top & bottom lip inside the opening to get a double DIN to fit, using e.g. dremel, at least we did on mine. I recommend doing a little at a time & test fitting as you go, so you only remove what is necessary, and have a secure rattle-free fit. The trim ring will hide your handiwork.

I have read that removing the dash is the best way to install the radio, is that correct?

I have read through your post a couple of time and it has helped and I do appreciate your report. From your pictures I see you install the radio with the install kit in the dash once your removed it, what is holding it in the dash? Does it actually lock into place once you put the dash back on? It may all make more sense once I get my radio and installation kit...

The tabs the screw into the side of the radio is what holds the radio to the dash. It locks in nice and tight.

All my parts came today and I was checking out the backup camera which came with no instructions. How did you guys wire your backup camera? I want the camera to come on whenever I choose. The power wire that came with the camera is pretty short. I assume it is suposed to be connected to the reverse wire on the taillights. If I want to power the camera at anytime, I guess I must run a keyed power source from under the dash to the camera? If I do this should I use a switch to toggle between reverse power and contant power? Or, should I just forget it and connect it to the reverse light wire and be done with it?

I just did this..
1. wire camera hot all the time, not to the reverse lights.
2. get a Y (2 male 1 female RCA)
3. Plug female in to camera feed
4. Plug both males in to "camera and AUX" inputs
At this point when you hit AUX or Video in you will have full time camera.

To add the auto reverse switching (when you put it in reverse the camera automatically cuts to "on". from you radio there will be a reverse wire, connect this to the trans MLP plug 10-12 pin plug on trans (driver side). while plugged in and looking at the plug, its the side closest to the trans second wire up from the bottom. IIRC its black/ tan.

doing it this way will you to have the screen turn on when you hit reverse as it should and if your bored and want to see what going on back there at 75mph I just hit aux and I can see my trailer or anything on my trailer.

One caveat: Some cameras designed for vehicle use don't have a lot of life in them. Running them for countless hours may... or may not... give you issues with camera life.

I wimped out. I paid for a professional install. It was only going to be $60 but the install kt supplied by Crutchfield seemed chezzy so I bought a install kit from the pro. It came with a trim ring and looks very professional.

Camera works in reverse and there is a rear view icon on the homepage for viewing whenever you want. Have not tried a dvd yet. Will post a picture later.

Getting to know the unit. Works great.

I watched the pro do the install and I am glad I had him do it. It would have taken me several hours. He knew his way around the install pretty good but I could tell he had some trouble with the emergency brake wire. He could not find it. Eventually he did and it took him about an hour and a half

Install

I am able to pair with Zumo 665 blue tooth. Voice navigation, MP3, And XM from Zumo gps.

1L243 Do you know or can u find out what install kit he used. I agree the one from Crutchfield is cheesy. It is what I have now and would like to swap it out . Yours looks like it fits a lot better.

Looks exactly like mine. You will love it. Some people can't even tell I am talking on Bluetooth ....after the truck gets warmed up that is.

No I don't but it came with a trim ring and the Crutchfield came with a trim strip.
