Anybody have a 240 cid Crankshaft?

Well after a couple of months of having the engine apart and to the machine shop, I find I'm in sudden need of a different crankshaft.

Somewhere along the line of tear-down and leaving the crankshaft exposed in the shop/garage/truck, two of the rod journals have suffered some severe dents/nicks. They look and feel deep enough that I don't believe they will be salvageable. Journals were already .010 under.

So now I await the beatings I so justly deserve and am prepared for my penalty!

That's all I sheepishly know for now...

I don't know where to find a 240 CS but I think this would be the perfect time to turn your 240 into a 300. Get a 300 crankshaft and connecting rods, and, unless I'm mistaken, that's all it takes.

240 Crankshaft...

I already have the new pistons (.040 over) pressed onto the rods, the block is on the stand, head is ready all set for the 240. If I recall correctly, converting to a 300 would require crank, rods AND pistons.

I did consider upping the motor to a 300, but at the time nothing was bought/assembled. Now that it is, I don't want to eat the cost of the parts.

I did find a guy in my area (50-60 miles away) that has a 240 sitting in a car in his field. He made me an offer I can't refuse! He said I could pretty much have it as no sane person would want a 240 in anything but on the end of an anchor line (my characterization, not his). He's about a month away from pulling it into the shop to begin stripping off what he wants. With that kind of generous offer, I don't want to rush him into something since he's doing me a favor!

I have the front clip off my car and have intentions of removing the rest of the front suspension so I can strip and paint the front frame/cowl panel, etc. I have access to powder coating equipment and I have been coaing the bumper brackets and other miscellaneous parts off the front end. I could continue on this path until he's got the car in the shop/engine out; possibly 4-6 weeks. Then switch back to the engine.

The engine isn't running and I don't know if it will turn over with a wrench. I believe it will require a trip to the machine shop to make it useable so that adds another couple of weeks. So by middle of May, I might be able to reassemble the motor.

If I could locate an inexpensive core, quickly, then I could be rolling again in 2 weeks or so depending on the machine shop timing.

I could let the build schedule slip on the motor since it realistically would not be going back in the chassis until mid May anyway (if all goes as planned; but why would it start now?).

All in all; I'm just angry with myself for screwing up the crank I already had!

That's what little I know for now...

Well after making a few inter-web searches and some phone calls; I was able to secure a reground crank .010/.010 for $100 out the door; with no core.

I had some other guys looking around as well and apparently there are still a few of these around. Nobody wants them; but they are around!

I might still take the other member's offer to take the entire 240 engine he has as a spare head and other parts from the car would be good to have as spares (as long as the OL doesn't find out).

That's what little I know for now...

Hey, if you have the room, you might as well take the engine. They're not exactly making them anymore! Plus, as you said, almost no one wants them. A lot opt for the 300, or turn their 240s into the 300. You never know when you'll need it later.
