Diesel fuel costs continue slight decline

By Land Line staff

The national average price for on-highway diesel dropped another 4 cents to $4.088 per gallon for the week ending Monday, March 11, 2013.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported decreases in all 10 regions of the country, ranging from just under 3 cents in the Gulf Coast to as much as 6.4 cents per gallon in Central Atlantic states.

Prices are down slightly for the second straight week following an average drop of nearly 3 cents per gallon during the week ending March 4. Prior to the latest report, the national average had increased each week since mid-January, hitting a five-year high on Feb. 25. The national average is roughly 3.5 cents lower than the average prices in March of 2012.

Following are the weekly average prices for on-highway diesel as reported by the EIA:
  • U.S. – $4.088, down 4.2 cents
  • East Coast – $4.12, down 4.7 cents
  • New England – $4.243, down 5.5 cents
  • Central Atlantic – $4.171 , down 6.4 cents
  • Lower Atlantic – $4.058, down 3.4 cents
  • Midwest – $4.043, down 4.2 cents
  • Gulf Coast – $4.036, down 2.9 cents
  • Rocky Mountain – $4.01, down 3.7 cents
  • West Coast – $4.227, down 5.3 cents
  • West Coast less California – $4.165, down 4.2 cents
  • California – $4.28 down 6.1 cents

ProMiles, which surveys 9,400 fuel stops, reported the daily average at $4.078 cents on Monday, no change from Sunday’s survey results.

New York maintained the highest tax-included average in the ProMiles survey at $4.311 per gallon. Maine followed at $4.299. Missouri once again had the lowest tax-included average at $3.843.

In other energy news, the price of light sweet crude oil closed at $91.95 per barrel during mid-day trading Monday according to Bloomberg, unchanged since Friday. Light sweet crude is the type most commonly associated with diesel production.

In Europe, the price of Brent crude was listed at $110.06, according to Bloomberg.

On my last trip to the UK I rented a Peugot 308 (diesel) that averaged 49.5 MPG. Thats including cruising at highway speeds of 80 MPH. It fit our family of 4 with luggage.
