What's the best place to mount a winch?

I haven't ever had a winch but I think I am going to buy one. Right now I keep thinking of using a receiver hitch mount. That way it can go front or rear and move between two different trucks I have. The draw back seems like the weight it and having to carry it. I would plan on building a mount in the bed of the truck for the winch when it's not in use.

I just keep wondering why I see so many mounted permanently to the front bumper.

I am often in snowy conditions in remote areas alone and think that my biggest problem is sliding off the road nose first into a deep ditch. If I did that how do I pull myself out with a winch mounted to the front bumper?

the Hitch mounted Idea would be the best idea, aslong as your not planning on doing super heavy pull's at bad angles, that way if you go into something you can have it on the back and pull your self back out, or if you are doing a recovery you could mount it on the front

Wherever she lets you

Hitches are only rated for 8-10k lbs in a straight line directly behind the vehicle. Youll crumple one quick like if you pull on an angle like Larry said.

Get winches front and rear...
End thread

But seriously the other weekend I used my rear winch twice and front once.
I used rear to pull/ease myself back out of a bad spot after losing a tire off the bead, then I got jammed in a weird spot on a decent with tires at full lock. Needed to winch back just to straighten tires to then decent.

Used the front once just to get up a real nasty basically 45 degree hill along with 4 wheels spinning.

This trip they came in handy the most. Changing over would be a pain in the ***!

Also I had a dual receiver winch mount I made and it sucked on steep hills as it killed my approach angle. My winch would bash into the rocks before I'd start to climb.
With winch bumper it's now higher and closer inwards.

This truck isn't doing extreme 4wheeling so I think front and rear winches would be overkill for me...but I understand not wanting to move the winch back and forth several times on one run.

And since the reciver hitch isn't going to work for anything more than a straight line pull...I would have to come up with another mounting solution. I have a welder and can do decent work...I'm not a professional fabricator but I have built bumpers, rock sliders, and roll cages. So maybe some type of a cradle with a clevis pin would work.

The problem is there isnt an easy answer.

The best place is securely mounted directly to the frame in either the front or back or both. The problem with this is it either sticks out too far or does not have the ability to be moved.

A hitch mounted winch makes the most sense but unfortunately a regular receiver mount isnt strong enough for most wenches and cannot be pulled on an angle.

Sorry I missed your call. I was on the phone when you called.

there are a lot of people here on FTE that feel the best thing that could happen to this site is that the 4X4 offroad thread be closed permanently.

and you guys are doing your damnedest to ensure that it happens.
