Grease in TCase

Hey guys! I'm new to this forum, but I've been on alot of them, and I've been doing lot of research on this one so I decided to join because I need help. I know our transfer cases, well, atleast the new ones, take ATF, and but this one appears to have been modified with a grease stem.

It almost looks like they drilled through the fill plug. So, should I flush it, if so, how and with what? How can I get the fill plug/grease stem contraption out, and, where can I get a new plug? Why would they put in grease. So, I need a hand if any of you guys know a little more about these cases than I do. I also have some other questions, but those can wait for another day.

Definitely should have ATF in it. It looks like the steel nipple is smaller than the square recess in the plug, so you should be able to take out the grease nipple, then remove the fill plug. If the square recess is messed up, maybe an ez out would work, or weld a nut to the plug.

Okay, that sound fair enough. What should I use to flush the grease out? I have a feeling it won't just cooperate and run out like it should.

If they filled it with grease , like out of a grease gun , There may have been a reason . That is an old trick for bush hogs . The seal goes out , hard to repair sometimes . I did that with my 30+ year old bush hog . It leaked like heck , Parts hard to get . Filled it with grease in the 90's , still works . What I'm getting at ,is , there may be an issue with your tcase that you haven't seen yet .

Only way to get all the grease out would be to remove the tcase, seperate the halves, and clean it out. That grease probably completely fills the tcase. Its not hard to do, I was able to get mine apart w/o even needing a repair manual. (I did have one on hand tho, just in case). And as far as plugs go, I was able to get new ones from a local trans repair shop

when tcases start leaking really bad a quick fix is to fill them up with grease... i´ve seen it done before also... one think i can guarantee for sure that even if you flush it with diesel to get all the grease out and try to fill it up with ATF its not going to work right... your tcase is begging for a rebuild... not to mention all the leaks that will appear with ATF..

Like these guys have said, sounds like somebody was going for a quick fix. But, like Brad said, just get another used one. They run pretty cheap.
