04 F 250 engine always ticks for a few seconds on cold startup

Every time I start my truck when its cold or has sat for an hour or so it makes a loud ticking. It sounds like its coming from the top end like the oil is gone from the heads. Its always done it... should I be concerned? Is there a way to correct it?

My 02 5.4 does the same thing. It never concerned me too much, but is is annoying. Maybe I am living in ignorant bliss.

Pretty common with some miles. The hydraulic lifters drain, creating a gap for your tappets to chatter until oil is pumped back into them. Usually only takes 3-4 seconds. No need to be concerned as long as your oil level is correct. Let it warm up a bit.
A heavier wt oil can help.

My 04 5.4 does the same thing. I'm running mobil1 synthetic 5w-20 and a motorcraft filter. on cold start-up she rattles for 3-4 seconds then is quiet. warm start-up, no problems.

I agree it's pretty common and probably nothing to worry about. You could try going to a 0W oil rather than the 5W, as it will get flowing more quickly when cold. Also wouldn't hurt to try a Motorcraft filter instead of the Wix. I've seen several cases where people had startup rattle that was cured simply by using the Motorcraft filter.
