diff between SD and HD, also oil capacity.

I just picked up a 70 F100 Flareside with a 300 i6.
PO says the motor had been swapped with a HD 300 from a SWAT van.
Sticker on the valve cover says its HD from 74-75.
I also know you can't trust stickers on easily swapped parts.

First question is how would I tell the difference between the SD and HD engines.

Second issue is I have put over 5 quarts of oil in it and it doesn't even touch the dipstick.
Does it hold over 6 quarts and is the dipstick the proper one for the engine?
# on the dipstick is 14045832 W

Thanks for any light you can shed on these issues.

I believe the differences between a regular 300 and the HD version were all internal [crank and possibly lower compression pistons]. The external difference would be the exhaust manifold. The outlet points straight down rather than angled toward the rear and measures 2 1/2".

I would be surprised if the oil capacity exceeds 6 quarts.

OK then. I will have to assume that the dipstick is not the correct one.
I have the MPC but was unable to find the part number for the proper one.
I might have to get it with tube. Unless someone knows the proper length of the dipstick.
Then I could get a generic one and cut to length.
Here is a pic of the manifold. looks like it is the SD from your description. (unless they kept the original manifold)
No way to know for sure without a tear down I guess.

That is a standard exhaust manifold [not HD].

The dipstick seems to be sticking way up... can you get a photo from the driver's side?

here is from drivers side and where it goes into the block.
I know you can't always go by stickers but got the valve cover ID sticker.

You had previously mentioned that the replacement engine came from a van. That would explain why the dip stick is angled toward the front... imagine the engine being recessed in the van.

Here is a link to a vendor who sells reproduction HD exhaust manifolds, so you can see what the HD unit looked like.

I got to thinking about the engine swap and the oil tube being where it is.
I wonder if they used the tube from the van and the dipstick from the original truck.
Any one know the length difference between the 2?

There is a member whose name is NumberDummy who would definitely know, but he would need to know specifics regarding the two vehicles [your p/u truck and the donor].

I do not know, but would think the dipstick from a van would be longer than one from a pickup truck.

Update: I had asked about this in the Bump forum and got a response from ND and this is definitely the wrong dipstick.
Possibly even a GM stick.
Now I am also questioning the tube as most seem to think it sits improperly.
I will see if I can find one at a pick-a-part and try that.
If I have no luck with that I will get a generic one and mark and cut to the length I need.

Thanks for helping.

The van dipstick tube is much longer, ends just over the front belts.
