Diesel leak in valley - time for fuel bowl o-ring kit

I figured that there is a slight diesel leak in the valley of my 7.3.

Just ordered the fuel bowl reseal kit and a couple of new filters from Clay.

Next maintenance job will be to pull out the fuel bowl, give it a thorough clean and re-seal with the military grade blue o-rings - the ones that DON'T dissolve in Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel!

Riffraff Diesel: Complete Fuel Bowl Seal Kit

Great info on how to do the job here:

O-rings and fuel bowl filter arrived from Clay yesterday. I spent a day pulling off the fuel bowl, following Guzzle's instructions. Good way to spend a wet cold Saturday. Just like in Guzzle's pictures, the coating on the o-ring seals on the drain value has dissolved in the ULSD. I ordered the military spec blue replacements and they're now fitted. It cleaned up nicely.
Biggest pain was picking out the remnants of the Vibra-lok sleeves. 3 done, have to finish the one on the FPR tomorrow.
Looking forward to having a dry valley again!

Thought I'd nailed it when the truck started straight away after I finished.

Then it started to run rough, leaned out and stalled. Now it won't start. Have a thread happening on our US bro's site to see if anyone stateside can figure out what I've screwed up.

Primed 3 times as per Guzzle's instructions. There is fuel in the bowl as when I open the drain it drains out - I have a hose and tub underneath to catch the diesel.

Guzzle's instructions said it was possible to do it in situ, but easier if you take it out. I also got the full seals kit which included the Vibra-lok seals for the head-flow pipes, inlet pipe, and fuel return pipe. Once they're all off then it's only 2 bolts to get the bowl out.
Once out it is really easy to inspect and clean. The biggest pain was getting the old Vibra-lok seals out. The one on the fuel return was really wedged into the brass fitting.

I had/caused a minor problem with the tower valve inside the fuel bowl. When fitting the tower valve the internal rod fell out of it's centre position. Once I removed the valve, disassembled it, the problem was easily seen and rectified.

The trick was to hold the tower value 5 pieces all together while lowering it into the fuel bowl.

Just had a good w/e 400k highway run up and down Clyde Mountain. The truck is running sweet. More importantly the valley has remained dry! Problem solved.

Also, as per Guzzle's observation in the fuel bowl re-seal instructions, the Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) that Australia is now using will dissolve the stock Ford O-rings.

Hi Rod,

any idea why your fuel bowl is constantly leaking, especially if you replaced the seals?

The reason I ask is that I remember reading on the US forum about one truck that continually leaked around the fuel bowl cap. It turned out that the fuel return valve was blocked & the fuel pressure inside the bowl was reaching 100psi - blowing past the cap seal.

The fuel return valve is where the FRx is fitted, top left side of the bowl as you face forward. It would be worth checking, or possibly adding the FRx kit instead of fiddling with the stock fuel-return valve.

It might be worth checking before opting for the Bowl Delete. Most Bowl Delete owners run big sticks, big or dual HPOP & tons of other mods resulting in having to do the bowl delete in order to get enough fuel to their injectors. I was talking to Clay about getting a bowl-delete kit and his take was that it was not really worth doing it until your truck needed it.
