New Diesel in Old Truck?

Has anyone put a newer Diesel engine/ Allison Trans and Transfer case in an older truck like any years from 67-79? It seems like it would be a great Mod to do on one of these old trucks...

I am attempting to put a dta360 into a 76 highboy. I bought the engine with an allision 545. I plan on just using the np435 so i have a granny with a np205. Only going to put a hx35, send injectors in to a pump shop, and turn up the pump a little bit, 250bhp and 500ftp...That's just for now, I need to get a dana 80 rear and dana 60 front when I plan on building the dta360 up to 500bhp

lots of people have. Cummins seem to be the most common. That's what I'm currently doing.

There are guys who have done the power-joke motors, IDI's and even a perkins or cat here or there too!

My plan is to just put f350 super duty, or f450 leaf springs, swap them over, should be able to compensate for the 1200lbs cummins, my engine weighs around 1350 with all fluids in it.

A project for the future...I have plans to "re-skin" a 2003 F350 4x4 SCLB 7.3L using 1979 dentside body panels/bumpers/grille/bed/hood but keeping the interior and other items current. Adding "harley davidson" edition emblems/paint/seats. I haven't really done much research but I think it would be very cool. I have searched FTE site for something close to this idea but I haven't found anything yet...? So, the final look would be a 79 F350 4x4 SC PS 7.3L "harley davidson" edition.

scott79,
That sounds like a great project.. Look forward to seeing it come to life. I have friend in Michigan that bought a 2004 F350 Crewcab longbed Superduty Pickup and when he decided because there are no emissions laws in Michigan he was going to do some mods to his 6 Liter Powerstroke. His Cousin works for Ford and he took the truck and tore the exhaust off of it, pulled the cab off the truck and took the heads off and put in hardened Head bolts, put in a strait exhaust with no cat or muffler, took off the EGR system, bumped up the pressure and put a chip in the computer and it now puts out over 700HP and over 800 Ft LBs of torque. Now he has a 8K LB truck that can turn 13's in the quarter mile... Lots of people dont like the powerstrokes but with the right mods they are a pretty good engine... The mod cost him about $2000 to complete... Im looking forward to a test drive the next time im in Michigan...

JRB65, well it is slated for "sometime" in the future (next couple of years). WOW, that sounds pretty cool, and not too bad for 700hp and only $2000. Sounds like a fun test ride for ya...

Buy a wrecked cummins truck & you have a great donor. I got my original donor for $1800, drove it for a year (it wasn't pretty though as it was side swiped & trashed when I got it) and then took the motor & parts I needed out of it. I kept the motor & sold the stuff I didn't use for about $1500 I think.

As for the suspension mods - nope. Well, not much if anything was needed, but I did some for fun. I did lower the spring mounting points in the front 1" to make up for what little loss in ride height I might have, but the springs are stock, I just had them checked to make sure they were within spec. & not sagged out. I also had delrin pads/sliders added between the leafs at that time to help with ride quality. I figured the weight of the cummins (only a few hundred pounds more than a 460 weighs - so it's like a 250-300 lb. buddy sitting on your bumper!) would do the most to kill the "rides like a brick" quality though.

Sounds like a great project. I'm building a 76 highboy with a 6.0 powerstroke and the factory 04 5 speed auto and transfer case. I put a 78 dana 60 in the front and a stirling 10.25 in the rear. The whole lot fits like it was supposed to be there. Lots of wiring with the 6.0 but getting there. Do you know of any other late model diesel in dentside threads?

You can spend just about anything you want to spend. Pay someone to do the work and buy new engine and parts and I'll bet you can spend $30K or more. You can buy a used or wrecked Dodge, keep the parts you need and sell the rest and do the swap fairly inexpensive. With all the trucks I have bought and sold (2 Dodges and several Fords) for a part or two I needed, I'll bet I don't have over $1000 in my truck. Buy the time I finish the body work and paint, I won't have over $2000 total.
