i don't mind white letters on a highway-tread, stock-size tire.. but anything else and it looks too busy and 1980's 'ish.
285 and 305 are pretty much the same diameter, 305 is just wider (essentionally a 33x12.50 versus a 33x11.50)
The 305' s are .02" shorter according to the tire calculator. My observations pulling my tiny fifth wheel with my old truck were though with the wider tires would cause the truck to follow ruts in the road, but I also had wider wheels to go with them which may contribute as well.
