No thats the maximum loaded weight of your truck. Towing weight is based on the complete powertrain and vehicle curb weight so the maximum allowed trailer weight depends upon what engine you have and how much crap is in your truck.

^^^ bingo. GVWR is not towing capacity, it's maximum legal weight of vehicle, occupants, fuel, and cargo. With a 4.9 and 3.08's it won't be very high.

My '90 owners manual says the maximum combined truck/trailer weight for a 4.9/3.08/Auto is 9000lbs. The lightest truck config possible has about a 4000lb curb weight so the heaviest trailer you could legally tow is 5000lbs.

Conanski, does your manual also have it broken down by cab & bed configuration? In my 97 manual there are differences between the three cab configurations and the bed lengths. Wheel base is a determining factor as well.

Guess I was over the GVWR today then, my '89 F150 6cyl, C6 with 2.73 gears towed with a tow bar a complete '89 F250 4x4!

Truck didn't like it.....but it did it. And believe it or not, the stock brakes on the F150 stopped this load fairly well! F150 is 4500lbs, and F250 should be around 5500-6000lbs.
