Did a 78 F100 300 have a smog pump?
Hello,
I bought a "project" (78 F100 2WD 300 vin code "B") a year or so ago and will need an inspection before I can get tags/registration. I checked with the local inspection shop and they stated a "visual" emission inspection will have to be done. The motor is missing the EGR valve, the cat is still in place but there is no sign of an AIR (smog) pump. None of the AIR hoses are there, no diverter valve or AIR tubes, some small vacuum lines are plugged.
The crank pulley is a three groove unit. One for the alt, one for the power steering the the middle groove is empty. However, it's not an A/C truck and the middle groove is for a wide belt, not the small 1/4 groove like my 79 302 uses for the AIR pump. Am I correct in assuming the empty middle groove on the crank pulley is for the A/C option and since there is no small groove, that my truck did not have an AIR pump? Thanks for the help.

The Ford master parts catalog lists one for the '78.
Pump assy., exhaust air
Fits 75-78 E-F100 from sn W80,001 w/ 6 & 8 cyl
D5TZ-9A486-D
That being said, whether YOUR truck had one, I don't know. Is there any chance that the emission sticker is still on the valve cover? and if it is, is it still readable?
That would deffinitely tell you whether your truck originally came with one.

My 77 F100 w/ a 300 straight 6 arizona truck has one. I had to redo all of my emissions equipment as well to pass here. I found parts from a 70's econoline van that matched up and worked fine. If you need help with vacuum lines I had to do a lot of research to figure out how to route my 77. I think autozone has the vacuum diagram online if that helps any.

Thanks to all you guys for the help and advice.
mikeoOoOoO, "Fits 75-78 E-F100 from sn W80,001 w/ 6 & 8 cyl
D5TZ-9A486-D" Are they referring to the VIN here (snW80,001), if so mine is well before that. Why I did'nt think to check the valve cover sticker I don't know, I even worked parts at a Chevy dealership and NAPA many years ago. I'll check that out the next opportunity I get to go down there.
As you mentioned, and according to the illustration, one check valve goes to the egr spacer, I'll check for signs of a plug there, I do have a big hose off the air cleaner that goes nowhere. I'm assuming 98445 (steel tube) goes to a port(s) in the head like my 79 302? The exh manifold does not have any fittings /plugs like would be used on Chevys or 89 351W.
Number Dummy, all these years, I've always thought "thremactor" referred to the heat stove that sent warm air off the exh manifold to the air cleaner.
Thanks again, you all have been a big help.

Serial number: Last 6 digits of the VIN / Mike posted the applications based on parts catalog listing: From serial number W80,001 only refers to 1975, pump also fits 1976/78 (and etc, see below).
All Trucks/Bronco's/Econolines: 1967/77 serial numbers begin with one letter, followed by 5 numbers / 1978/80 serial numbers begin with two letters, followed by 4 numbers.
Updated applications:
E1TZ-9A486-D (replaced D4TZ-9A486-C & D, D5TZ-9A486-C & D) .. Smog Pump / Misc applications: 1974/78 E/F100/350 all 6 & 8 cyl / 1979 E/F100/350 300 I-6 / 1979 E100/350 351W
Also fits 1980's stuff, but I'm not looking up the applications because it's time consuming royal PITA!
After 1979, the only way to look up emission related parts is in the Calibration Code parts lists. 1980/89: There are over 500 parts lists just for F100/350's, Bronco's & Econolines!
FoMoCo is in-famous for replacing 10's of 1000's of part numbers EVERY YEAR!

I meant numerically before, as 2000 would come before 80,001. I was confused (but you have since clarified) that they changed the VIN in 78. Thanks again.

C5TZ-6312-L .. Harmonic Balancer contains 3 sheaves (grooves).
Your '79 300 has a T/E belt, but unless the 1978 was sold new in Canada, there's no T/E belt listed.
There's a belt routing pictured in the parts catalog, but I can't recall if it has to do with A/C only.
Will look later as it's well over an hour past feeding time for our 5 Basset Hounds, overfed big dummy (6-5, 325) and "She, who must be obeyed."
