steering column/wheel differences pre-77 and 78 and up?

Folks,

I am about to order a Grant steering wheel. I notice that their adapter kits make a delineation between 77 and prior and 78 and newer.

Is there a difference in columns or column wiring/internals between these years? The reason I ask is that although my truck is technically a 1979 F350, the cab is from a 77 F100. I am assuming that whoever swapped the cab kept the column that came with it...makes sense to me anyway! So, I may (likely) have a 77 column in my 79.

Is there an easy way to tell what I have so that I can order the right adapter kit?

Cheers,

Roy

If your column below the wheel is about two and a half inches in diameter and steel, it's early. If it's about five inches and plastic covered, it's the late.

T/S switches and steering wheels are specific to 1973/77 or specific to 1978/79.

vocatexas,

thanks for the concise description in differences. that helped a lot!

ak ford guy,

the photos were the icing on the cake.

by the fat, plastic covering around the column below the steering wheel, it would appear that i have the later version.

thanks again. you guys rock!

Will the 79 wheels fit on a 77 column? horn & cruise work?

I've heard that they can be made to fit, but it takes some modification. It also wouldn't look right, because the back of the wheel and the column wouldn't be the same size. If you want to go to the smaller wheel, it would probably be easier just to change the entire column out.

ak ford guy,

no tilt.

v10 man,

i was wondering the opposite! from images that i have been looking at, my steering wheel appears to be a 77 and prior (it sure looks similar), but my column is definitely from a 79 (contacted the p/o and he confirmed he used the 79 column in the 77 cab).

maybe it's because i don't have cruise control that makes my wheel look like the older versions, since number dummy states that the columns and wheels are distinct.

thanks for the replies.

The early columns had a larger diameter wheel. The horn pad was inset into the face of the wheel. The '78 and up wheel (also fits early '80s models) is a smaller wheel and the horn pad covers the entire spoke of the wheel. The early models were made from a hard plastic molded over the metal spokes and ring. The later ones had a softer plastic fitted over the spokes. It's basically hollow inside when you take the horn cover off.

If you need me to, I could try and get a photo of the face of each wheel and measure them as well.

D4TZ-3600-A .. 15 1/2" 2 Spoke Black Steering Wheel: 1974/77 F100/350 & Bronco, 1975/77 Econoline (except 1975/77 F100/350 & Econoline with Speed Control).

This wheel (repro'd by Carpenter) was also the FoMoCo "Service Part Replacement" for 1971/73 F100/350's that came with blue/black/green/red/tan steering wheels.

1975/77 F100/350 & Econoline used a specific black steering wheel (D5TZ-3600-A), horn pad and turn signal switch (D5TZ-13341-B) with Speed Control.

1973/77 F100/350, 1974/77 Bronco & 1975/77 Econoline T/S switch specific to M/T (D3TZ-13341-A) or to A/T (D3TZ-13341-B), without Speed Control (Bronco not available with Speed Control until 1978).

The horn pads without Speed Control (black camera case finish & wood grained-Ranger XLT & Econoline Chateau only) are the same 1971/77 F100/350, 1974/77 Bronco, 1975/77 Econoline.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E4UZ-3600-A (replaced D8TZ-3600-A) .. 16" 2 Spoke Hard Plastic Black Steering Wheel-Use with Manual Steering: 1978/79 F100/350 & 1978/88 Econoline.

E4UZ-3600-B (replaced D8TZ-3600-B) .. 15" 2 Spoke Hard Plastic Black Steering Wheel-Use with Power Steering with/without tilt wheel: 1978/79 F100/350 & Bronco / 1978/88 Econoline.

D8TZ-3600-C .. 2 Spoke optional Black Simulated Leather SOFT PADDED Steering Wheel: 1978/83 F100/350 Ranger XLT/Lariat, Bronco & Econoline.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tilt wheel intro'd in 1978, operates by pressing the turn signal handle forward.

1978/79 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline T/S switch (D8TZ-13341-A) is specific to tilt wheel.

T/S switch specific to A/T (D8TZ-13341-B) or M/T (D8TZ-13341-C), without tilt wheel.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D7OZ-3600-A .. 3 Spoke "Sport" Steering Wheel: 1977/79 F100/350 & Econoline, 1978/79 Bronco // 1977/79 LTD II (NOT LTD!)/Ranchero/Cougar/Mustang/Thunderbird/Mark V.

Factory installed Speed Control was not available with this wheel, as it has a round horn button. If people wanted Speed Control, dealer installed was all that was available. Control mounted on the T/S handle.

thanks again, vocatexas. no need take photos...i just measured my wheel and checked the type of plastic, horn placement, etc. it's definitely a post-77 wheel.

numberdummy, you go above and beyond the call of duty! from your posting, i would say that i have the E4UZ-3600-B.

cheers!
