Smutt on the bumper

The service writer at the dealer said he has had a couple of owners before come in with the same problem. I wash mine about every other week but I do about 5,000 miles a month so it adds up quick. 6.2gasser we have the same truck. I thought it was a picture of mine. I've had no other issues with the truck and had a 15,000 mile oil change saturday. The problem to me is not what I can see on the outside of the bumper but what's going on behind. I've seen corrisive exhaust fumes rot out metal before.

So we all pay 50,000 dollars for a truck with the damn exhaust pipe to short.
I wash my truck on a regular basis but I don't want to wash it every day. In one day I may drive 500 to 600 miles starting with a perfectly detailed truck and get back home that night with a black bumper. This reminds me of the 96 and 97 f-150 with tailpipe in front of the rear wheels. The fumes ate the chrome off those wheels and ruined all the aluminum wheels. This will take the chrome off the bumper in time unless you sit on the tailgate and keep it washed off going down the road. That would be loads of fun but maybe if you only drive 10mins a day you don't see it till the next wash day. That's right y'all wash yours everyday.

And here I thought this thread might've been about NSFW bumper stickers.
This is another reason why I'm done with chrome, too much maintenance... I'm still entertaining the idea of line-x'ing the bumpers and buying the XL grill. The quality of chrome plating anymore is mediocre at best...

Maybe we should gather more info from the trucks that are having this issue. For example; Crew cab, standard cab, short bed, long bed, etc.....
Also packages, like I have the chrome package and the chrome tip extends the factory pipe just a bit. We might be able to figure out that it's happening on one model only and conclude Ford didn't run the tailpipe out long enough.
I have been on a 500-600 mile trip while towing 6K and didn't have anything on the bumper when I got home.

It's going to be raining tomorrow so I won't be able to get some pics but maybe Thursday when I make the return trip. My truck is the same as yours color included. So it makes me wonder why mine and not yours. Maybe my chrome package tip is not pulled out far enough but I would've thought it would be an extension to the standard pipe. Going to start doing some research. Maybe we could do some measuring to see if my pipe tip is the same as yours. I'll get back to you, thanks.

interesting.....I have not noticed any soot on or near my bumper.....I try to wash my truck every other week depending on the weather.
4 days after buying my truck I had to make an unplaned trip to Boca Rotan FL I basicailly did a turn and burn down and back no stops. That was almost 1800 miles round trip. When I left y truck was detailed from the dealer since I just bought it and when I got back it was still pretty damn clean other than road dust but never any soot.

I have an idea that I'm going to give a try tomorrow. I'm wondering if the soot is coming from me using the remote start in the mornings to warm up the truck. Before I leave for my return trip home tomorrow I'm going to clean the bumper and see if there is any there 4.5 hrs later when I get home. We'll see how it works out.
