So it turns out that my 1, 7, and 8 ignition coils are bad and causing my engine to misfire. I purchased the 3 new coils and want to install them but am a little confused as to what to do with the fuel rail. Am I going to need to depressurize the system and take the whole thing off or is there something I'm missing that will make it easier to pull the coils out and put the new ones in? I'm not too experienced with repairs and would really appreciate any info anyone can give me

 

What year? Should just be able to unbolt the old coil and pull it out. Haven't looked real close on my 3V to know if the fuel rail is that far in the way. I know on the 2V's it isn't.

 

ive talked to a mechanic about that before he said if you take your time you can get them off without pulling the fuel rail

 

#1 should be very easy, #8 the most tricky but even then it doesn't typically require removal of the fuel rail. Using 1/4" drive ratchets & extensions helps considerably.

Take your time, don't let that mess of plusmbing and wiring overwhelm you---it really is just a matter of persistence and careful proceeding.

Check your plug torque when replacing the COP's, don't forget the dielectric grease in the boots and harness connectors too.

Hopefully you have Motorcraft COP's and not a cheap aftermarket brand?

 

It's a '99 4WD Supercab. Yeah I think I should be fine with 1. It's just pulling the heater hose and other wires out of the way to get back to the 7 and 8 coils. The ratchet extension sounds like it'll be necessary. I assume I'll just have to give the coil a good bend to sneak it under the fuel rail.
