stereo install! questions

How do you remove the factory head unit, door panels, and the rear speaker covers? Also, wheres the best place to route the power cable for an amp? I am doing an install on a 96' super duty and I just like to do all the research I can before I tear into this thing. Thank you!

You don't need a professional to do it. A little bit of knowledge on the matter goes a long way. Is the head unit the type with the 2 holes on each side? that requires a tool. I think walmart might even have it if you look around by the stereo stuff. You just jam the tools in and pull the stereo out. Its very simple. I'm not sure about the door panels, they're probably different than the bricknose so I don't wanna mislead you. I've ran power cables under the carpet typically. I pull the seats out and route it through the cab, and then through a passage in the firewall. Drill a hole, and make sure to put in a grommet so you don't slice the cable on the metal. I put mine in with 0 experience, and I haven't had to redo anything.

all my connections were lose by my error and i just said that because if they break it you get new nomatter what, the stock head unit should have 2 holes parralel with each other get a metal hange,r cut it, bend it to a "u" shape, insert then press till it locks and slide it out. it will take some time and frustration but patence is key. next when you get your new unit and the wireing harness, plug it in and splice to the speakers it will be color coated or say whitch speaker. the amp is the easy part run the positive to the positive termanal with the fuse spliced in to the positive cable, groud out to a bare metal serface, the RCV cables will have a spot in the amp with left and right, plug one set in to the amp the other in to the head unit and i think thats it tape everything up and cover it, and enjoy and i recomend sautering the ground conection and positive conections

dont use a metal hanger cuase the get stuck in the freakin head unit just spend the two dollars to get the tool. also with the tool you only need to go in like an inch till they click untherwise you better be real strong to get the clip back out. the door panels have screws and c clips and the rear speaker covers on mine have screws on the outside bottom and top edge of the cover and pull out

Coat hanger work just fine. I recommend only using one on the driver side and dropping the glove box to reach inside the dash and push the tab in by hand. Works just fine for me. As for door panels, they are held on by screws and some clips. Buy replacement clips if you don't want the doors to rattle. On my 92 the rear speaker covers just pop out. Mine are the metal mesh type. As far as amp wiring, run power inside the cab. Either side works, just be sure to route the power wire on the opposite side of the cab from the remote turn-on and RCA's from the headunit.

Yip there more than one way to skin a cat. I have used allen wrenches in the holes to push in the tabs to pull the radio out. You dont need to spend money on the tool. You can buy the radio install kit that comes with the plugs that plug into factory radio harness. They are nice if you dont know which is youre constant hot, key hot, remote, or speakers.

Thanks for the help. I have done many stereo installs on trucks and boats, this is just my first older super duty I've worked on. I just would rather have an idea on how to remove things vs wasting time trying to figure it out myself. I have the experience.

Another question, how much space is behind the radio in the dash?
