Rear fuel tank

I need to replace the rear fuel tank on my 93 F250 7.3 IDIT. I found a guy who will sell me one out of a 94 F350. Is there a way for me to know if it will be a direct swap? What would I need to know to determine whether it will work or not?

It should be a direct swap. IIRC they didn't change the tanks at all.

Just found out the tank is from a 460 gasser. Is the tank different?

I don't think to tank is different but the sending unit and pick up is. You will have to use that from your old tank.

i not sure if the gas tank will work on a diesel.
the gas tank will have an electric pump in it, the diesel tank does not. if i remember correctly the sending unit mount flange is different on gas and diesel tanks.

As I understand it, the coatings in the tanks are different between diesel & gas, and as Tom said above, the sending units are designed so as not to be able to mount in the wrong tank...

You can change the mounting flange real easy, just have to cut or grind a tab or slot so the diesel sender will fit. I did that for my truck. As for the coatings, not sure if there is a difference so I won't comment on that, except saying it should work.

This is from an old thread here:

edit, just did some reading, very odd reaction that can form a soupy paste and break down some of the diesel. Wow, never knew. A gasser to diesel swap would need to factor in new fuel tanks, unless the current ones are plastic. Either way, interesting. It had be guessing but when i thought about it, any issues would have arisen with the PO not with me. The reaction will corrode off the lining somewhat fast.

Phy, that is certainly true for galvanized tanks. However, I'm not sure if the gasser tanks actually are galvanized or not. I know at least one aftermarket company uses a ni-terne process (nickel/lead plated) on all their tanks. My front tank is from a gasser and its been running for ummm like 4 years I think and I haven't noticed any problems.

I don't want to say thats true of all the Ford tanks, like I said, I'm unsure what they actually are, just wanted to put in that I've had no problem.

Hi tecgod,
Glad you've not had any problems. I know the tank on my gas truck looks galvanized, but It could be a different coating that happens to look like galv. I don't have any personal experience with the issue, just thought I'd post what I've read.
(I'd think first-hand experience that it works fine trumps posts that say it doesn't. Pretty hard to argue against success...)

Cheers,

Phy

I put this in my 87. you have to get the gas sender and fab a longer dipstick where the pump would have been and play with diff lines the ID's are not the same, re-locate the spare tire and get diff straps. sounds worse that is was. 38 gal on tap is nice!

Get the 38 gallon tank. Just makes sense.
