59 F100 running problem

I recently purchased a 59 F100 4x4 with a 292 motor. Since purchasing it I have replaced the points with a point eliminator kit due to not having any spark. After obtaining spark I replaced the fuel lines, pump, and filter. At this point if I spray starting fluid into the carb it will run for a second then shut down. I am rebuilding the carb tomorrow to see if that fixes the problem. Any ideas or suggestions on how to make it run are welcome. I just want to hear my baby run. Thank you in advance.

Tom

Tom, welcome to FTE, hope you can post up some photos. You've pretty much done all you can do to the fuel system after you rebuild the carb. Beside the canister filter on the pump, if you had that style fuel pump, there may be an inline filter between pump and carb base, and possibly a ceramic one in the carb body. I actually found all three on my truck when I got it, the PO 's idea of redundancy is good, I guess.

If the rebuild doesn't "take", you might have to buy a reman one and they are hit-or-miss in my experience, so I go new usually, as I cannot seem to have any luck rebuilding the simplest of carbs.

Also, you may as well remove and clean and possibly reseal your gas tank, if it needs it.Be a shame to pump crud through your new carb. Let us know how it works out.

Steve

Forgot to add that I already dropped and flushed the fuel tank. The pick-up line was clogged and was the cause of my initial fuel problem. The truck hasn't been started in 5+ years so I'm excited and ready to get her on the street. As for pictures, I figured out how to set my garage picture but not quite sure how to place a picture in the threads yet.

All in all I rebuilt the carb, flushed the tank, new fuel pump, went to a pointless ignition, changed the oil, and the coil. She still needs some tuning but after 5 years of not running I had to expect some work.

Congratulations! Now you should celebrate by confiscating a little of the wife's "mad money" and go buy a few parts for the truck.
