7.3 powerstroke in 79 xtra cab 4x4

First off, i know the cummins swap is easier but seeing as how the powerstroke comes in the ford thats what i want to stick with. I have acquired 2 7.3's, one is a 1999 and the other is a 2002. still in the planning portion of the build, not sure if i am going to use the 79 frame and running gear or when i find a 1993 or newer ford truck if i will use it's frame and runnung gear. I also plan on installing the dash, steering and pedal assy. out of the newer truck into the 79 cab. I have been into the 70's ford trucks for quite some time and have disassembled more trucks and broncos than i care to try and count and i have never done a diesel transplant into one and want too. As i get started i will try and post updates and pictures along with finishing up my new shop.Any info from anyone that has started or completed a powerstroke conversion would be much appreciated.

I have a 79 Ford also, mines a 2wd. I'm thinking of a diesel swap too, want to stick with a Powerstroke also. What year do you think is the best for the 7.3l's? thanks

late 99 through early 2003. early 99 engine is dependable but some parts are different and more expensive to replace.

Thanks for the info. Electronics wise is their a year that is better then the others? Want to run the least amount of electronics as possible.

I am in the process of doing this swap. I purchased a complete donor truck cheap. I am using the firewall out of the donor truck also so that I have the clearance that I need for the turbo and such. As far as the electronics, use the late 99 to 2003 and you will be fine.

if you want less electronics you can go farther back to the 6.9 IDI or I think the first offering of the 7.3 should have a simple manual injector pump.but probally would sacrafice some hp.

if you want less electronics - go with a 93. Even a 94.5 NON power joke motor = the IDI. They are mechanically injected vs. the electronic injection of the 95+ stuff = easier to wire (if you need that).

If you get an early, non turbo motor Banks sells a turbo kit that will give it enough power to get out of it's own way...
