Tranny wont engage drive
I recently swapped my 351 gas engine and tranny and installed a 6.9 l, and the tranny. the trannies are the same model(E4OD). The only diffeerence it the the new tranny came out of diesel truck due to that the gas tranny wouldnt mate up with the 6.9. all the wire connections are the same, there is proper fluid level in tranny, i took of the shift cable linkage to match it up with the tranny. nuetral start switch works properly. there is no vacuum attachement on teh tranny. I am thinking, since the truck had a gas running sytsem, Do i have to swap out the computer from a diesel truck, since there is no reading coming from the engine for the RPM? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

E4od trannys need the rpm signal from the motor and the signal from the vss and tps to shift correctly and I don't thinl tje 6.9 has the tach sensor to send the signal and the gas computer will have to be changed since the diesel is 100% mechanical there is a different program in it al the computer on the diesel e4od dose is the tranny and the shift points are different the diesel won't go past 3300 rpm and I don't think ford put a e4od behind a 6.9 iirc when they switched to the 7.3 they switched to the e4od
but you might be able to get a oil filler neck from a 7.3 and put the sensor in it but i don't know of the injector pump gear on a 6.9 has the notches to send the signal

there is a tach sensor on the oil filler tube on top, right in front of the injector pump, with two wires coming out that attached to the same harness as the glow plugs. there is no first gear ownly second and drive gear, when i put the truck in gear.it starts moving olny in cecond gear then i have to manfully shift the column into drive(D).now i know there is no overdrive, by pushing the button on the end of the gear shifter. the light goes on and off, but no shifting.

it is in limp mode because it has no electronics and it WILL burn it up. And all you need is the gear housing, the tach signal comes off the gear teeth. No extra notches. Find an e4od diesel computer and some wiring diagrams for both gas and diesel, study and have fun, patience, it is not that hard.

tps
there is a tps on the oil filler tube, on teh 6.9 with only two wires coming out of it. on the original gas truck wiring diagram teh wires that go to the tps are brn-wht: gry-wht: gry-red. I got the chassis electrical diagram from the haynes maual, page 12-55. is there any possiblity to plice in the wires so the computer can read the rpm. i will work on getting a computer from a diesel truck in the same time period that is compatable with the 1992 f series trucks. thank you again. no i have to go back to school to totaly understand the electrical diagrams.

Yes you do the diesel has different rpm ranges for tranny shift points, AND it has to have the RPM sensor from the engine to the computer...Theres a wiring diagram in my album that will help ya out and get her shifting
