Looking at a 08 F150

Anyone know of any problems. Also 5.4l or 4.6l, which is better. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This will be my first f150

I've got the 4.6 3V in my 09 and it's an awesome engine, it's a daily driver and I don't haul anything extremely heavy. 20MPG and I have a heavy foot.

It would depend on how you intend to use it. As a commuter and occasional light to moderate hauler or tower the 4.6 is more than adequate, without the spark plug or cam phaser issues that the 5.4 has. The 5.4 would be my choice for heavier workloads.

There are numerous threads in this forum about these issues. A search will give you plenty to read about them.

Basically the 5.4 plugs are 2 piece and sometimes very difficult to get out. The cam phasers vary the valve timing and seem to have a high failure rate.

Of course, the 2008 trucks have a much less of a problem with the plugs and phasers than the 04 and 05 trucks..

Mine is a 2008 and is 4x4. Is yours a 4x4 also? I am just on my first tank of gas through it to determine what kind of mpg it gets. I'd LOVE to get close to 20 mpg.

The 08 5.4 did not have the spark plug issues. They had a redesigned head that used a different plug by then. The phaser issues were not nearly as common either.

Early production 08 still had the 2 piece design. You have to make sure the COP are Brown in color. Do not recall the date the design changed.
