1996 F150 trans issues, popped out of gear, sloppy shifter

Have not posted in a while but have a issue with. My truck lately, my trucks a 1996F150 5.0 4x4 auto trans, 110,000 miles Fluid level is perfect and clean also. I changed the filter about 8,000 ago and fresh fluid.

Now my problem. I was driving today and. I had my foot about 3/4 down and it held first gear and wouldn't shift up I let off then few seconds later shifted up.

2nd, I was drivin earlier and it popped out of first gear. Over the last month or so I really been noticing my gear shifter is getting real sloppy. Kinda hard to find the gear you want. Could that be the problem to some of my issues?

If I need a new transmission I'd rather get a used one in there rather than spend a grand having a shop rebuild it, I don't want to waist more money on this truck because I'm searching for a clean 97 and under power stroke

Since my trucks a 96 is it gonna be a hard find for a trans?

Stop worrying, it's a 5 min fix. Look for replies to my post on the same topic. There are two or three screws under the dash that work loose cause the selector to be in the wrong place. Took me 5 min to tighten them, don't need to remove anything. Been fine ever since for me.

I hope its a simple fix. I've heard of the problem he is referring to. That could be it. Another possibility could be the position switch on the side of the transmission.

I was suspecting the same thing (MLPS), but I was going to see what happens after the OP tightens down the known loose shifter first. Never ignore the obvious, start with the known bad/simple things first.

I'm gonna try the shifter thing first. But I feel the problem is more serious. But I'll try it. A few weeks ago it was bouncing between 2nd and 3rd gears.

The shifter slop should not cause it to jump out of gear. This is a 3 minute fix with a ratchet, 3" or 6" extension, and a T30 bit.

MLPS is the likely culprit. Is your T/C locking up? Do you feel any slip?
