Well, part of the reason is because the 4R100 in the Gen 2 Lightning has a shallow pan, and uses the shallow filter. One of the most common mods is to pull the pan and upgrade to the 4x4 pan, and of course, the deep filter.
So it's not only because of the E4OD options.

I just experienced what I'd consider shutter while sitting at a light. I let off the brake to pull forward a few feet and it was jerking forward. I stopped, then let off the brake again and it was fine. Waited a few seconds and tried again and couldn't reproduce it. Then pulling away from a light a few blocks away it did it again. Pulled over and checked fluid and the level is fine.
Any ideas?

I never realized ford utilized the 4R100 in other applications other than behind a 7.3. Just didn't think about it I guess. So if looking for a used replacement trans, we should include the lightning in the search as well? Or are there differences other than the pan?
Edit: obviously the best place to look for a replacement is BTS or JW, but if we need a core or something to get us by for a while, what all should we be looking for at a junkyard?

4R100's are used in the V10's too.

Great write up and photos. I have completed the trans fluid exchange as well following Mark's write up. The only thing I added was oil analysis from Blackstone. When I first pulled the fluid it was very very dark but didn't smell burnt. I first changed the oil at 187,900 miles back in 08. I bought the truck in 05 @ 153,000 and didn't know the history. I just made the assumption that I had 30,000 miles on the fluid. The report back wasn't bad but wasn't good either (IMO) Blackstone stated iron, read at cautionary levels (258ppm) and recommended a 15,000 mile oil change. After 9,900 miles I pulled a sample and again the iron was high(205ppm) but down from the last sample. They recommended another change, which I did and a sample after 10,000 miles. At 11,500 miles I completed another full service and sent in a sample and the report back was alot better. Iron was down below the universal average of 156ppm to 56PPM. I then ran for 20,500 miles (01/2010) on this fluid service and the report back showed typical wear levels. Viscosity normal and no trace of moisture or contaminants. Insolubles are at a trace. Iron at 72ppm up from the last sample and all levels are down under the universal averages. Recommendation: 30,000 miles for the next change. I plan to change out the fluid next month (close to 30,000miles) and send in a sample. I have 266,000 miles on this 4R100 transmission with no repairs made. I haul a gooseneck horse trailer and haul a 9" cabover camper. I use the Ford filter and Valvoline Merc V. I think adding oil analysis as part of the maintenance process a small price to pay for getting the most out of these transmissions.....
