coolant temp sensor

coolant temp sensor
how does the pcm use the data provided by the coolant temperature sensor? just wondering because AE is reporting that on a cold start my coolant temperature is 302 F. perhaps i need a new sensor? the gauge in the dash offers no clue. is there a seperate sensor just for the pcm? i know rangers have 2 coolant temp sensors. maybe our trucks do too? or maybe AE isnt reading it right? what say you?

If you watch it long enough, the temp will drop down to a more reasonable level as the truck is warming up. But as Rick said, it's not used by the PCM, so you're really just wasting your time watching it.
Supposedly the stick shift does use the coolant temp a little, but my coolant temps are all over the place too, so I don't really know. If you're curious about temps, watch engine oil temp. That will give you a better idea of what's going on.

On my Scanguage II the indicated temp is 2x the actual until it reaches 257 and resets the display to the actual temp, which averages 15 less than my oil, so pcm must be utilizing the sensor readings somehow.
Concerning the delta, I believe i'm at the threshold and maybe ought to consider doing my oil cooler?
