2001 5.4 intermittent miss

My 2001 F150 with 5.4 Ltr. engine has developed an intermittent miss when the motor warms up. I suspect a failing coil pack however the code reader did not identify a problem. Any ideas on how I can identify the problem / Is there a way to check the individual coils? Thank you

Yes ,you can take a resistance reading with an ohm meter ,if your scan tool has capture mode it will capture miss fires and tell you which cylinder is the cause.

2001 5.4 intermittent miss

FortyFords,
I have tried the ohm meter with no luck. I compared to a brand new coil and all my coils are identical. I think it is due to the fact that the miss is intermittent. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I would say heat is a factor if the coils resistance are the same !heat will cause break down of a coil
as well as water getting into the coil or wiring

With and intermittent missfire you'll need a scan
tool !

Have you chk the heater hoses ?
there has been a known problem with 5.4 's leaking antifreeze on the coils and shorting them
out.

I personaly own a 98 expidetion with a 5.4 also. I found some cold & warm idle problem's also. The problem began @ about 98k
miles . When I scaned the ecm nothing came up either so I just
went strait to the iac "idle air control" valve. And sure enough
it had some sooty build up to it . I cleaned this out with some
throttle bodie cleaner by letting it soak it cleans best "try not to get the motor part to wet the cleaner it could damage the motor
end" you should notice the difference right away. Try to use a hig-
her quality fuel I did and have had no more problems.
