i would never mount a winch to the front of a truck.
put a trailer receiver hitch up there and mount the winch to that.
then run power to both the front and rear of the truck. this way if you get stuck you can pull yourself out. with a front mount winch, the only way to pull once stuck is deeper into the unknown you are already stuck in.
with the winch on the hitch setup, stick the winch in the rear because you know you can get out that way, you already drove through there to get stuck.

Tom,
That is indeed a good idea. I did think about that possibility as the truck I got rid of just before I got this one was an '86 Chevy 3/4T 4WD that I had rigged that very way. I had a 9k Ramsey winch that mounted in either the front or the back of the truck. I had it rigged this way for about 20 years. Heck, it even had a 2nd battery for the winch that was electrically isolated from the primary battery for more reliability.
What I found in all that time, was that I think I only put the winch on the rear of the truck 1 time, and it was for the reason you mentioned. All the rest of the time, whenever I had it installed, it would be on the front as I would be pulling something else out of the stuck or pulling the pipe in my windmill, etc.
To be fair, I don't do much off-roading, and don't plant to at all in this truck, but rather use the winch for working on my property, as mentioned above. When I saw this cavity under this bumper, I saw a potential opportunity to permanently mount a winch where it would be out of sight and protected from the sun, etc and be there when I did need it. One of the things I found with the "either-end" winch was that it spent much time in the garage, not on the truck, in my way.
That's my thought process on this, but the jury is definitely out...Keep those cards and letters coming...
