Well ok maybe I'm leaning towards it being a FX4 with wood trim? Is that possible? I've found some other FX4's with the two tone paint so I guess that's not a definite sign that it's a Lariat. Especially because of the grill & rims, but that wood trim....?? hmmm I'll check with the current owner in more detail tomorrow. Hopefully he's got the original build sheet

Here is what I found on a VIN Decoder that I found.

2004 Super Crew 139" XLT
MSRP ---> $32,655
Invoice --> $28,534
Destination Charge --> $795.00

5.4 V8 300 HP
30 gallon fuel tank
P255/70R17 tires
3.55 gears
ABS 4 disc

Hope this helps.

I wondered if on the dash if it said Lariat, or FX4 by the gear selection indicator ?

I'm pretty damn confident that what you see in those pictures is a Lariat with some FX4 stickers and a black grille. Why? Well, NO FX4's came with Adobe two-tone paint (Adobe is tan, fyi). The two-tone would have been grey.
Secondly, FX4's had a console, this one does not, and FX4's were grey or black leather or cloth, NOT Adobe leather. None of the FX4's had Adobe accents anywhere in them, would have been all grey and black.
Thirdly, the dash layout is definitely Lariat with white dials, and three dials at that with the speedo being in the middle. The FX4 would not have white dials and it'd be two big dials, tach and speedo.
Just my $.02, but I'd damn near put a paycheck on this being a Lariat.

The more I dig into the difference, the more I become convinced that you are correct. The FX4 type features are due to easily exchanged parts, (grille, wheels, stickers, badges...) where the Lariat features (steering wheel, bumpers, seats, ...) are bit more difficult to all get right. Good work!

Skid plates are a part of the optional off road package
Where is the FX4 badge on your truck?

Well I hate to solve the mystery but I'm almost 99.999999% the following is what happened:

I talked to owner today and he was more than happy to help figure this out. He didn't realize you couldn't have both trims on the same truck so he was just as curious as I was to figure it out. I asked him to first look underneath to see if there were skid plates and there were skid plates. I then asked about the AC system if it had the automatic sensing stuff that only the Lariat had and he said it did. He also told me the badge on the front fenders also says Lariat on them. After flipping through the factory manuals he then dug through the glove box and found the ORIGINAL WINDOW STICKER!! Yes thats right, it was buried under all of the manuals and such. SO FINALLY he started to read it and BAM!

2004 F150 4x4 Crew Cab LARIAT 5.4

He continued to read and more details emerged, this truck basically has every option. They added on the skid plates, tow package, limited slip rear, 3.73 gears, power pedals, heated mirrors, Homelink, etc. So it has everything! I then asked him if his dad was the original owner and he said he wasn't sure but he would find out. After a few minutes he called back and said that his dad had bought it from the original owner and that the only thing he added to the truck was the bug deflector on the hood.

Sooo... my theory which I'm 99% confident is that the original owner just liked the FX4 look and wanted his Lariat to look like that but have the Lariat bling bling. Now we don't know if he swapped all these parts at the dealer or had traded or bought them and put them on himself. But the grill, wheels, and stickers are definitely not OE parts for this truck. But honestly I like the FX4 look better myself so I guess it's really the best of both worlds. If it pans out that I buy this truck, that stupid looking bug deflector is the first thing to go! Looks like a dang uni-brow!

I also have a CarFax on it and the rig is accident free. It also checks out what he said about his pops being the second owner. Ok well thanks for all your help guys, if I can I'll try and shed more light on this Lariat/FX4 mystery as I learn more.

Post I'm new here, but...

I thought I could help. I have owned a lot of Fords, and I found this when I had a P71 cop car. I just bought a 2005 Lariat today and used this to make sure it was limited slip: FordEtis home page

You can put in your VIN under the vehicle tab at the top and it will pull the build config. That truck 1FTPW14584KC72931 is a Lariat, not an FX4. It came from the factory with the 4x4 badge, not FX4. Here is what the site came back with:

Easiest way to tell if a F-150 is a Lariat or a FX4 is the grille and the fender flares

Lariat Flares are always painted to match the bumpers
FX4 flares are always black unpainted and textured

FX4 gets the "H" bar grille

and of course the other stuff guys listed above. it takes alot to swap the stuff to trick you visually into thinking a Lariat is a FX4 or vice versa.

Quick Reply: Can you have both FX4 and Lariat in the same truck??
