Factory roof racks...usable ..?

Factory roof racks...usable ..?
my factory roof rack cross bars are so tight to the roof I don't understand how they could be usable...what am I missing ?

If ya don't mind scratches on the roof, they work fine.

First mod to my X was to remove the factory cross bars, I like my paint too much. Yakima after that, using about every option they have...

I pulled my cross bars off as well, I left the main rails on though. There is plenty of room inside, I don't need to pile stuff on the roof.

I removed the factory cross bars and used the factory runners and added these:
They are made by Thule.

I did this $5.00 mod, but only use it for my canoe. I used a plastic spacer & uni strut nuts;
