1999 F-250 Super Duty 7.3

I have a 1999 F-250 Super Duty w/7.3. I need the diagnostic equipment to test the engine. I had no power to the injectors on the passenger side. I replaced the gaskets with wiring, put in a new idm and it started. I drove about 50 miles and the engine light came on. On the way home it acted like it was running on maybe 5 or 6 of 8 cylinders. I need to check the codes. I live 15 miles NE of McKinney, Texas. Can anyone help me?

gengine is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Maybe post in the Texas chapter forum for somebody with AE. You might find somebody closer that way. If not, I just bumped you to the top! hope you get the help you need! Meanwhile, maybe check to make sure that the wires are plugged in going into the valve covers, and that the wires traveling over the left valve cover are not rubbed through (to the 42 pin connector).

Thanks John2001 and gengine. I replaced the pigtail and the gasket with wires and checked for bare spots at the drivers side at the valve cover when I was replacing the gaskets and idm. I replaced 1 injector on the passenger side but it was probably the wrong one. I may just need the AE.

Number 8 injector is the most common to have problem with... Check to make sure everything is connected tight

just a thought here but, i've heard of some wiring at the drivers side front wheel near the frame or shock area that can have chaffing. "hopefully some one can expand on that for me". might be worth taken a look anyway.

Thanks John. I will check the connections under the valve covers where you put the chopped quarter as well and the pigtails on both sides. I thought I would also unhook the connection to the injectors 1 at a time to see which ones make a difference on the running. It acted like it was only running on 7 on the 50 mile trip but coming back maybe 5 or 6. I could only drive 35 to 40 on an upgrade and 55 to 60 on a downgrade, neither being a large hill.

Thanks tappit01 and twg1966. I'll check for the chafing and be watching for the thread from the other person.

I got the gaskets with wiring and pigtails at O'Reillys. They come with the pigtails. I don't remember the brand.

Yep, Chris is right about this. The wire bundle going up to the DS VC chafes at the DS shock mount. Definitely a place to check.

I'm assuming you ohmed out the injectors at the top of the VC harness. Might try the same thing at the 42 pin connector. Keep working backwards toward the IDM till you isolate the break.

No I have not ohmed them out, however, I did take off the passenger side valve cover today to make sure nothing came loose that I put in. I put a nickel in the harness inside the valve cover for future wear so it won't come loose. I started the truck with the cover off and noticed all the injectors on the passenger side are oiling and the manifold is hot all the way across. Someone said in the past before I joined the other day that if the injectors are oiling, they are working. If that is true, then the problem does lie on the drivers side like John2001 said. It might be #8 and it might be the chafing. After I close up the passenger side, I will start on the drivers side checking all the things all of you have told me.
Thanks,
Ron

P.S. Prior to getting the IDM I had the valve cover off the passenger side and used a volt meter and had my wife crank the motor while I checked for juice on each injector wires connection and I had 0 volts on all 4. Also, when I would get the truck semi running on 4 cylinders, drivers side, there would be no heat on the manifold on the passenger side. It appears as if the sides have switched but it is not as bad this time. At least the truck will run, just not good.

The voltage to the injectors is so brief, a DMM may not be able to read it fast enough, therefore not showing any voltage. But, with no heat, the cyl's aren't firing. If it switched form side to side, check for burnt pins at the 42 pin connector, and check grounds.
