What year did the 5.0 roller start in trucks

I am swapping my engine again and i am looking for a roller motor. I need to know what years to find it and is the h.o mustang 91 and up the same. Which computer is best to use mustang or the one in my truck or the one like the engine from a roller motor truck. My truck is a 1990 F150 302 aod 4x4. Thanks for the help.

I think someone said 1994 was the first year for roller lifters in a Ford truck.

I believe the previous poster was right (1994). The best year for the mustang rollers were 1987 and up. 1986 had flat top pistons and they cause issues with head swaps ect. I would suggest hunting for the 87 and up and then think about purchasing the ford motorsport E cam to swap into it. The mustang engines were made to produce peak HP and TQ at high RPM's. Most of our rigs shift at 4000-4500 so we will never see the high rpm power if we use the stock cam.

I'm in the process of doing the same swap and I have almost completed it (idling issues). The only thing different from the mustangs to the trucks was the knock sensor. There is no hole in the back of the block for the knock sensor but the area in which to drill the sensor is very easy and all you need is a bit and a tap. It is virtally impossible to do damage or get filings in your block because the port is a closed port and is not attacted to an oil gallery.

good luck!

Brett

Hello Brett, I am glad to hear from you I seen in some of the past post that you were doing the swap. Can you tell me what all exactly you did and did you get your idle taken care of? I found a roller long block, guy did not know what he had for $125. The casting on the heads are E7TE but what concerns me the casting on the pistons are E4TE have not looked at casting on block but it is a roller and has the mustang style oil pan. Can you e-mail me direct if you have time I need to know also which computer to use or to get a mass-air conversion made for the truck. Some say that using the 1990, or somewhere in that area that does not have the air bag, computer out of a mustang will give a little better response because if the spark curve. If i leave stock cam i will not need to convert. Any more info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chad (cwmerc88(No Email Addresses In Posts!))

Chad,

I am still currently working on my idle problem. I have both Mass air and the stock speed density set up and I have been swapping between the two to help with troubleshooting. I think I have narrowed my problem down to a lower intake vacuum leak but who knows?

I would suggest sticking with the truck computer and trying it out for a while before doing all of the swaps. For you to install that engine just throw it in and change the firing order and you will be good to go. I didn't have time to install my knock sensor but I wish I did instead of leaving it disconnected.

Again I would suggest going with a different cam because you will not be able to use the full potential of the roller engine due to the RPM's in which your tranny will shift. Remember that the roller block has an additional 1000 rpm redline. The E cam will still give you the power you need but at lower rpm's. I believe that the motor I have said that the B cam gave 350 HP at 4500 RPM's where the E cam gave 339 HP at 3500 RPM's. It's worth the HP loss!! (granted I have forged pistons and GT40 heads)
