Fuel filter change???

How hard is it to change the fuel filter on a 1989 F150???
I think I need a special tool to remove the lines on both sides of the filter, any help would be appreciated.

Fuel filter change???

Hello, there may be 2 styles of clips holding that filter on. The easy one is just white plastic clips that you can pry off with a screwdriver. They just stick down through the fitting. New ones should come with the new filter. And just push in with fingers to re-install. Watch for fuel spray when you disconnect the line and maybe remove the gas cap first. Make sure you have new clips for sure because sometimes they break.

Fuel filter change???

I just replaced the fuel filter on my 92 F150 and what a pain in the a**. After about 2 hours of pulling and prying I broke down and called the autoparts store and asked if they had a tool for removing them. They said yes. It's a 5 dollar tool that looks like the letter 'X' and is used to expand the internal locking fingers of the fuel line connector. It looks like an 'X' because one side is for one size of fuel filter and the other is for another. Once you get the tool you use the side fitted for the filter and wrap the two mating sides onto the filter tube and press it into the fuel line adapter. I needed to use a screwdriver and press the snot out of it so as to expand the fingers which then it pops out.

If you don't have this kind then hopefully someone else will read this and forego the agony of discovering a tool for an otherwise easy job that should take 15 minutes.

Fuel filter change???

I think the 1989 model has the older style clip. Alot easier to deal with.

Fuel filter change???

thanks for the heads up.. Fuel filter was $10, book labor was .7 hrs. It was worth it to pay someone else to do this job - I hate messing with gas.
