Exclamation 1992 F150 4X4 shifting hard

Hey guys, I have a quick question for y'all. My truck (1992 F150 XLT 4X4 with manual hubs and manual 4x4) has been shifting out of 4Lo strangely. It often makes a grinding noise, similar to metal on metal. In addition, sometimes when I shift in 4Lo my truck actually jerks forward a bit Is there something that I am not doing right, or is there something wrong with my transfer case? I don't know much in the world of transfer cases, so I'm asking y'all. I already did a search and read for hours on here, and nothing I have found seems to be similar to my problem. I fear there is something wrong with my truck, but I'm hopeful nothing really is. Idk if it makes a difference or not, but my driveway faces uphill at a good incline, so I have no idea whether it can cause a truck to shift into 4x4 roughly or not. Thanks for the help guys

I have a 97 f250hd which is sometimes difficult to get in and out of 4x4Lo and always jerks when the 4x4 locks. I have had the truck for about 3 years now and it has always done this and hasn't caused me any problems. But my tranny decided to stop shifting recently ( not sure if they are related). I have not tried 4Lo since the new tranny has been intalled though, will try it tomorrow and see if there has been any improvement.

Man, that sucks. Hopefully it will work for ya I appreciate the answer, and it does make me feel a bit better about things lol. I'm hoping your right and that the trucks of these series do this sort of thing (at least the non esof ones) since a new transfer case would be kinda pricey.

When I shift mine into Lo I'll get the truck rolling at a low speed (~5mph or so), shift the trans into neutral, and shift into lo in one motion without pausing in neutral. I'll do the same thing when shifting out of lo. No need to pull hard or force anything, that leads to breakage.

4Low is an extreme use only option and not something you should be using very often, and to get into or out of it the truck has to be stopped with the transmission in neutral.. otherwise powertrain damage can result.

Thanks for the input guys, it is possible that I am not doing it in a smooth enough motion and actually pausing in neutral for a fraction of a second, and this may cause the gears to clash possibly. I always make sure that I am stopped and in neutral before shifting it into Lo, and I have not needed it but a few times, so the fact I rarely use it could also be a part of it maybe.

I think so. It takes a good amount of effort to push down and back smoothly, and the time it has done it in a smooth motion it shifted without much problem, but the truck still did jolt forward a bit, so I am likely not pushing down hard enough like you said is part of it.
