Thinking of purchasing a 1966 F100.
F10 = F100 2WD
J = 240 1V I-6 (J engine code for 240 was only used in 1965. A was used 1966/74 for the 240).
L = Michigan Truck Assembly Plant.
698871 = 1965, assembled June 1965.
Some states back then registered vehicles the year they were first sold, not by their actual model year.
Doesn't seem likely that this 1965 sat on a dealers lot from June 1965 past January 1, 1966.
Do not believe a single word a private seller claims! They lie just like used/new car dealers, lawyers, politicians and TV evangelists.
Do not believe the miles shown on the odometer as it reads to 99,999.9 then returns to ZERO!
Even if the truck really was a 1966 and those 55,000 miles were correct, I'd be very leery of buying a truck that spent time in a state where salt is used on the roads.
Rust never sleeps and is the mortal enemy of these trucks. Inspect the radiator support where it attaches to the frame rail, the cab mounts, cab corners, rocker panels, floor pan, rear spring hangers.
Use a magnet on the sheet metal to determine if bondo is present.
Consider joining FTE's AZ Chapter. Bill W is the leader, owns a few of these trucks, lives in Tucson. Garbz2 (Dave) lives in Glendale, also owns these trucks and is well versed on them.
Boss9F100 (Randy-lives somewhere near Scottsdale) has a whole slew of these trucks, is installing a twin Turbo V6 Eco-Boost engine in one of them (see his thread).
AFAIK, I'm the only FTE member that bought one a these trucks brand new (1965 F100 8' Styleside 3/1965). Sold it 11/2009 as I could not longer fit in the cab.

5 grand for a truck with a dubious title? No way Jose! Something smells and it ain't hay!
5 grand for a truck with surface rust that was sold new in a state where salt was used on the roads?
How long has it been in the desert where summertime temps are 99 degrees...at midnight!?
I assumed it was in Arid-Zon-A as that's where you're located.
There is no way, none to find out diddly-doo about these trucks, as FoMoCo THREW AWAY all the records decades ago!
These trucks are not rare, so do not get "buck fever" and buy the first one you see, especially this rolling pile of miseries.
Speak with Bill W, he will assist you.

Bed floor is a rusty dented mess that instead of being repaired, was painted over with el cheapo paint job, L/wheelwell is dented. Side mouldings are not real, they're painted on!
Wrong seat upholstery, carpet doesn't belong either, as it only came in Rangers. Tailgate is from a 1967/72, what appears to be rust is bubbling up below right door sill.
Missing: Wiper arms/pivots, ash tray, glovebox ****, R/H outside mirror, Custom Cab: door trim panels/mouldings, armrests and taillamp bezels / Hubcaps are from a 1956 Ford Fairlane.
Whoever painted this pile didn't bother to mask off the tailgate handle or door lock cylinders, painted them red.
And these are the things that are plainly visible, what else is wrong with it that one cannot see?
There's an old saying: "A fool and his money are soon parted!"

Well I'll be darn, the trim IS painted on. Check that out - not bad for being painted. However,
-no gas cap, how much crap is in the tank.
-dent front lower left fender just behind the bumper.
-rusted out step area on both sides.
-didn't bother removing the door locks to paint - course some like it that way.
-not sure but isn't that a 67 tail gate?
-no engine shots.
Although on the surface, this truck might look ok, I question the honesty of anything on this truck after seeing they just painted over all the rust and holes. Kind of like a used car lot - through some paint on it and get it off the books. ;o(((((
