Ford 312 Y Block distributor question
I am getting ready to do away with the dizzy dist. and get a basic one. Mine has the mechanical and vac both. It is just going to be a driver for now. I have an Edel. 500 carb. on it. Could anyone recommend a dist. that will work. Any help is appreciated.

I bought a Richporter (Canadian) #FD06 and will be using it with a Pertronix ignition. The distributor is new, not remanufactured. O'Reillys had it for under $70.00 with no core charge. I'm replacing the oil pump and shaft as well as modifying the carburetor. Goodbye to the low-DOH!-Matic.

If the one you have is truly mechanical + vacuum, you already have the GOOD factory distributor. The early "Loadamatics"all vacuum) were the bad ones. Just remember: Disributors do TWO things-they control spark timing via centrifugal advance mechanisms (supplemeted with vacuum over-ride)) and they trigger the coil to generate the spark. The only thing most of the new fangled electronic systems do differently is trigger the the coil. Control of spark timing remains the same (unless you use an MSD box).
