I watched that unfold and the interview with the guy afterwards. While he paid 4.2 million for it he basically stated he would have paid much more. His comment was to the effect of " I wasn't going to leave without it".
I like seeing the different cars come across at B-J and there are plenty I would love to have. I could have bought every car on my wish list for $4.2 and had money left over to build a place to house them. I also thought of it in terms of some of the more expensive cars to come across the block. $200k is pretty serious money and buys a very nice classic. I could have bought twenty - $200,000 cars for what he paid for the Batmobile. Holy Cobras and Corvettes, Batman!

It was originally a Ford styling show car, the Futura, from 1954-5.

I watched the auction, too. It was interesting as the guy who won was bidding against a guy sitting right in front of him. After the bidding got up to 4.2 mill, he pulled out a coin and asked the other guy if he'd flip for it and they agreed. He flipped the coin, asked the other guy to call it and the caller lost. The guy was happy, and his wife seemed even happier. Later, the tv folks interviewed him asking what he was going to do with it. Initially he said he was going to keep in in his garage, then jokingly said he would park it in his living room.
The 4.62 mil price tag published is after auction fees added.

Be careful going to the Barrett-Jackson site. There are lots of pretty cars.
Then you search for trucks and find this:

It always was rough, it was built in just two weeks to meet the studio deadline. The Futura was already about 15 years old and pretty rough by the time the conversion started. Barris didn't build it he subbed it out to Cushenbury because he could meet the deadline, but he always took the credit for it. The studio hated working with George Barris, but since he owned the Futura they had no choice.
