How Do I.D. Front Springs?
I have 3 sets of front coil springs here::
1. The OEM set, that came with my '91 as a spec option when ordered: F-150 4.9L 5-spd. ordered with both the handling package and heavy-duty option.
I don't know the weight capacity of this spring, only that it was "computer selected"--quoted from the factory paperwork. Is there any way to tell from the spring about capacity and spring rate and so forth?
Eaton Detroit Spring told me that Ford probably used the next spring up, sourcing it from the LD-250? Any value to this?
2. Next fool move, I converted to 4WD, using a TTB setup from an '86, including new coils "the heaviest ones NAPA had for an F-150"; probably true. Same question--what are these intended for and weight capacity of these?
3. Then I lunched the aluminum M5OD, replacing it with a cast-iron T-19; for an encore I blew up the 4.9, and replaced it with a somewhat heavier 5.9L engine (see a trend here?); the springs I swapped in were new Moog CS-844S, the heaviest-duty ones in O'Reilly's catalog.
Yeah, they leveled out the front end all right...but I don't need the ground clearance any more--I need the MPG--so I'm converting back to 2wd. The question is: can I use any of these springs I have here? What do I have here? Or do I need to buy some more?
I know, I know...try 'em and find out if it bottoms.
