I've towed with both, and as far as actual towing, there's no difference. You don't have to worry about a slider hitch in the long bed, though with almost all new 5ers nowadays, it's little concern in the short bed as well. I like the long bed though for the extra room. I do okay with my short bed now, but have sure missed the long one a couple of times already.

I tow a 93 Holiday Rambler 29' 5vr with my shortbox and it seems to handle it nicely. I do wish I had bought the long box for the additional storage room, bigger fuel tank and no worry about hitting the cab, ever. I've also towed my 28' fishing boat (11' beam and 12k weight) on the bumper hitch and really wished then I had a long box. Anything to get what appears in the mirrors as the Queen Mary farther back of me!

I have towed with a cc with duals and long bed, a super cab long bed srw,and a cc cab with duals and a short bed. I much preferred the long bed cc with duals. I know you did not ask about drw vs srw. I could tell very little difference when towing with the long bed versus the short bed. However the difference in drw versus srw is noticeable. My brother who hauls as many cattle, horses, hay, etc as I do-said he would never buy another long bed again and he does not like dual wheels as they are a pita (pain in the a__) WHEN PARKING OR GOING THROUGH DRIVE Thrus.

I leave my hitch attached to the trailer when I'm going to park for a while and need the empty truck bed. Pull the four pins and lift the whole thing with the landing gear and drive the truck out from under. It's a little tricky to get it lined up and installed later, but worth it not having to muscle that sliding hitch out by myself. just sayin'...
