Borg Warner T85N question...

I have a T85N trans with the yoke bolted to the rear. It has a tag that reads C5T3C. Can any one shed some more light on what I gots? I'm in the process of adapting it to my '55 F100. A little machining to open the bell to fit the input shaft cover, finding or making a longer pilot bearing to make up for the shorter input shaft, etc.

Shoulda asked this question in the 1964/72 forum.

Borg Warner T-85N 3 speed O/D optional for: 1965/67 F100 240/300 I-6 & 352 / 1968/71 F100 240/300 I-6 & 360/390 / 1969/71 F100 302.

1965/71 F100 Warranty Plate TRANS code: B

Some of the O/D unit's internal part number prefixes begin with 16H = 1941 Lincoln Zephyr/Continental.

Thanks for the info! Are parts for these as hard to find as I imagine? Are any of the parts from my t86/r10 interchangable?

Parts are hard to find as all are long obsolete. Since the trans is from a 1965/71 F100, all the electrical related parts are 12V

I'd have to look up the T-86 O/D parts and compare with T-85. I'm not that far away from Riverside, if you'd like to do a comparo.

Thanks for the offer Bill. I grew up in Whittier and La Mirada. Might drop you a line sometime when I'm visiting the folks. Tomorrow I'm planing to pull the overdrive off of the t85 and have a look see inside before I mount it up. Think I might pull the t86/r10 apart too, just to see if anything broke in the OD. My t86 is 12v also so I'll be holding on to the solenoid and gov.

Yeah, that lock pin can scare you. I was tearing down an overdrive and didn't have a small enough drift to fit. I ended up bending something like 10 roofing nails before that pin came out.

Yup, I bent two drift punches before I grabbed a flat ended tapered punch and wacked it once with my BFH and it shot out. LOL! AR AR AR!

Well, I got the OD back together and now noticed the dogs for the 2-3 synchros are in the bottom of the case. I'll be taking it all apart again to replace the synchros now! "Does the fun ever begin!" LOL!
