1971 F250

Hey Folks

New to the site, I just purchased a 71 250 from the original owner a couple of months ago. I am planning on replacing my 95 250 with it. I have done a few 60s Ford cars but never done a truck so I hoping to pick all your brains on some stuff.

I have tore it down to the frame and started the restoration on it. I got the body back from the sandblaster a month ago and been picking away at the floor pans, cab mounts and body work. It was a little tougher than I thought but no turning back now. I have stripped the frame and POR 15 the rails.

The cab mounts fit like crap. I have seen some posts that the ones from MacsAntique Autos aren't the best. I purchased them from there before seeing that.Anyone else out there have to modify those mounts a ton before installing??

I also have the engine torn down and started reassembling it. I want to order some headers for it as I have a cracked manifold. I am just going to order some standard hedman long tube uncoated ones for it and coat them myself. It says they won't work for camper specials? Not sure if I have a camper special or not but does anyone know why they wouldn't work on a camper special? Can I modify them to make them work on a camper special if I have one?

I have attached a link to photobucket if you want to take a look at my project.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know the answer to any of your questions, but wanted to say nice looking truck you started out with, best of luck on your project, and welcome to the FT forums.

Welcome to FTE & the Bump Forum.

FYI: Floor pans are the same from 65-79 in the area that you have cut out. You could cut a better one from a donor truck and use it in yours.

Camper Special could have an extra gas tank that could be in the way. I have Hooker Super Comp on my 66 FE, I believe Thorsen makes a shorty that I would look at if I were repeating today. If I am wrong on the brand it will be corrected shortly.

Thanks John

The floor pans weren't too bad (at least the passenger side, haven't started the driver’s side yet) a little trimming and went in no problem. The cab mounts are a different story though. I suppose I could cut out some floor pans from a donor truck and take the cab mounts with it. The issue is that most of the trucks up here are in the same shape as mine.

I am nervous about ordering those headers and not being able to return them if they are wrong. Some sites mention that they won't work if the truck has a front sway bar, mine doesn't. I was wondering if that was the difference between a camper special and a regular old 250. Your points about the gas tanks make sense too

The shorty headers are an excellent choice and should work with anything. My Hookers have to be cut loose to replace the starter.

The Camper Special is a trim/accessory package added to the standard 250, radiator size, additional battery, additional wiring, springs among other things were part of that package, but all are added to a regular pickup.

The CS just has more stuff than reg. pickup.

It's Sanderson who make truck FE shorty headers... PN FF427. Uncoated versions are available from Summit, coated ones are available at Sandersons website.

They're purty:

The front sway bar issue is because the swaybar on Bumps was mounted between the radius arms - the same space that long tube headers would occupy. If not equipped, it should be okay.

If you want a front sway bar, opt for the Dentside version that mounts forward of the I-beams. I picked one today at the salvage yard along with a cherry tailgate decor panel.

I have a 71 F-250 camper special..It has duel tanks, mounts at the corners of the bed to tie the camper down, wiring at the front left of the bed to plug the camper in, duel batteries, power brakes, power steering, duel piston front calipers on the disc brakes, 2-1/2 wide shoe rear brakes and the nicer "camper special" interior package..Also the emblem on the rear of the bed says Camper special in a script writing..

Thanks for the header correction. I believe they would be my preference for a build today.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen.

I am definitely leaning towards those shorties now.

While I am irritating everyone with questions heres another one.

I have the flexomatic spring compensators on my rear leafs. They are missing the bushings that sit between the compensator and the spring itself. I could probably get away without them as every truck I have been under is missing them but I don't really want to. I have pressed new bushings in everywhere else. Does anyone have a picture of what these look like installed? I can't find a part number or listing for them anywhere and I went through this web site and it seems any pictures people have of them are missing the bushings. I am going to try to make something for it but wouldn't mind seeing what the originals look like.

I will try to get a picture of what the compensators look like when I get out to the shop tonight.

Google images are coming with pics the same as mine. (missing the bushing)

FoMoCo did not offer front (or rear) swaybars for F100/350's until 1973.

If present on a 1972 or earlier, were usually installed by an RV dealer or front end shop.

Dual batteries were also not available until 1973, then as an option. Common upgrade on earlier trucks by RV dealers.

Welcome to FTE

1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Illustration Section 55, Page 15 ~ Shows the Flex-O-Matic rear springs and related parts in an exploded view.

Fordification.com has this (CD) catalog on their website or you can get the CD from hipoparts.com

The compensator contains three bushings per side. The upper and center bushings are the shackle bushings and the same (C5TZ-5781-A ~ 1 1/4" O.D. x 5/8" I.D. x 2 3/4" long).

The lower bushing (C8TZ-5781-A) is located where the compensator nestles into the spring hanger that is riveted to the frame rail.

C8TZ-5781-A (replaced DOHZ-5781-A) .. Rear Spring (Compensator) Bushing / 1 3/8" O.D. x 5/8" I.D. x 2 3/4" long / Obsolete

SOEBY MOTOR CO. in Walhalla ND has 3 = 701-549-3711 (Walhalla located just S of ND/Manitoba border).

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 3 = 704-786-8139 / 800-476-9653.

PARTS INTERNATIONAL in Farmers Branch TX has 8 = 972-241-8730 / 888-727-0418.

You're a parts wizard!

I ordered the compensator bushings from that company and they are being shipped out this afternoon.

Welcome aboard,

I think even the cheap Heddman LT will fit your truck. Don't think it is a camper special as it has drums F/B and no extra tank under the bed. Mine is and it states in on the metal plate mounted just left of mirror base support. Has dual piston discs and extra tank. I don't think any of them have script that reads Camper Special on the bed aft. My 66 has that on each door but ?? It likely reads Custom as does mine, and clearly yours. I wondered what the brackets (removed from mine) were for mounted to the bumper and grill. Now I know LOL!! Someone must have removed some of my hardware for hanging the tire. Great looking truck for a resto! Looking good keep the updates coming.

Hi Bob

After all you guys helping me out I am sure its not a camper special. As for that spare on the front thats not going back on. I got clearance from the wife to be out in the shop all weekend so I should have some updates come Monday.

You have a nice collection going there. Those early 60's trucks are nice! I wish this one was a little older but I got this one for a deal that I couldn't turn down. It was an older gentleman (grandfather of a friend) and I got it for this great deal on one condition, he wants to drive it for a day when I get it done which I am more than happy to agree with.

Thanks for the help!

Hey guys

Got a bunch more done this weekend. Pictures are on Photobucket

Still have to finish the bottom cab corners and then I plan on starting those cab mounts. Anyone out there put cab mounts on their truck?

Still considering ordering those ones from Carpenter Ford. I have the ones from Macs but they look like they are going to be a pile of work to get to fit nice. I also have the cab off the frame, would you guys recommend tacking those cab mounts on with a few welds and put the cab back on the frame to check alignment? After I check the alignment, finish welding them in? They look like those have to be right on the money because there is little to no adjustment.

Thanks again!

12" x 2 1/2" front/rear drum brakes were standard equipment for 1966/72 F250 Camper Specials and F250 2WD's w/GVW's of 7,500 & 8,100 lbs.

Dual piston caliper disc brakes were an option for 1968/72 F250 2WD's and F350's, did not come in any package.

25 gallon auxillary tank optional for all 1967/72 F100/250 2WD's and F350 Stylesides, did not come in any package.

Tool stowage compartment optional (or available at the parts counter as a kit) for all 1967/72 Stylesides, did not come with any package.

Camper Special script nameplates located on the R/L cowl panels of 1967's, on the front fenders of 1968/69's. 1970/72 Camper Special emblems are a rectanglar plate, mount on the R/L cowl panel.

1968/72 F250/350 Camper Specials and Open Drive-Away's came with front fender clearance lamps, mount on fenders in front of the wheel openings.

But today, are the nameplates or clearance lamps still extant? Did a previous owner install a C/S nameplate on the tailgate? People just love to swap parts around.

There is no code within the VIN or stamped on the Warranty Plate that ID's a Camper Special.

There is only ONE way to tell a Camper Special from a non Camper Special.

At the factory, a multi pigtailed wire w/plug was placed in the glovebox at final assembly, to be used with camper clearance lamps.

This plugged into the Camper Special only taillamp harness, as it has an extra feed wire for this purpose.

No extra feed wire = not a Camper Special!

Uh...Carpenter is not a Ford Dealer! Reproduces parts and buys/sells obsolete parts.
