No current to IP
Hi, I just got 8 new Motorcraft gp's and I started the truck and drove about 50 ft to my work shop and the truck shut off just like I turned the key off. I have 2 new batts, it turns over fast. The glow plug lite does not come on and with key on there is no current to the IP. There are 2 electrical connections on the IP what do they do and where do they go. Can this problem be a fuse?
Hope you can HELP.
thanks nick c

What year truck?
The two connections on the IP are the FSS (fuel shut-off solenoid) and the cold timing advance. The FSS needs to have 12v to run, and should have 12v when the key is turned to run or start. I believe it's the forward most connector. On my truck ('94), it's on the same circuit as the power to the glow plug controller...

Read the sticky at the top of the forum about the old style glow plug system. It should have all the troubleshooting you need to check out the glow plug system, and directions about converting to a manual push button.
I don't believe there is a fuse, but one or two fusible links instead. Those would be over by the fender mounted starter solenoid.

I have removed all fuses and 2 circuit breakers from fuse panel in cab of truck, and checked them with a continuity tester, all good. I have printed out the 2 page sticky on 83-86 glow plug, relay and controller tests.
The GP relay is good, I can take a jumper wire from pos batt and the relay, it clicks and there is current to the GP's.
With the key on there is no current to the relay or the IP or the GP controller, I took the plug off the GPC and there is no current with a test lite to any of the 5 pin plug.
How does the IP get its current?
I have a paper back chilton 65-86 paperbach ford pickups manual, very little info, just a small wiring diagram. I also have a large chilton hardbach 82-86, not much info.
thanks nick c

You have a blown fusible link from your ignition switch that runs the glowplug controller and the fss, it will be a Red-Lt Green wire with a blue fusible link on it. I'm not sure where its located, but most likely probly around the glowpulg controler. Also check to make sure your fuel heater isn't shorted as that will blow the fusible link.

Problem solved. I know 2 things happened at once, no current to gp's and the ip. So I stuck a test lite in the ip solinoid and grounded the other end. I assumed the problem might be just in back of the gp relay. I started moving the fuseable links, there are 3 between the relay and infront of the fan motor. I moved 1 and the lite came on to the ip, then I knew where the problem was, it was a broken wire close to the fuseable link. It is different than the other 2 because it has 1 wire in and 2 wires out. I removed the fuseable link and soldered in an inline 20 amp blade type fuse. I have current to the ip and the gp's.
I'm ready to install the 8 new gp's and would like to know if you guys use never sieze in the gp threads and the heating element?
I read someone has a schematic to install a starter button inplace of the gp controller, where is it?
thanks for everything nick c

I used never sieze on the glowplugs, but just the threads, not sure if it would hurt the plugs putting it on the tips, but it would defently burn off for how hot they get (bright red/orange). Check the stickes at the top of the forum page for 84-86 old style glowplug system, mite have a schemtic in there.
