1990 4.9 5 speed manual Blown Tranny
Hi folks. I took the ID number off the side of the Transmission E9TA-CA than it goes on with 902758. I think it's the mazda 5 speed, but I don't know what gear ratio it is. I want to make sure of what I have before buying a replacement. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, this suggests you have the Mazda:
What Ford transmission do I have, Toyo-Kogyo, Maxda M5R1, M5R2, Mitsubishi, FM145, FM146, FM132 - Drivetrain.com
What do you mean "what the gear ratio is"?
I have to think any salvage yard will be able to find you a tranny armed only with your tranny ID number.
Maybe you want to consider the upgrade to the ZF tranny?
It would help if you'd put your truck details in your signature.

This is a good time to upgrade to a ZF5 from an F250 HD or F350. If you can find one anyways. You'll need a small block one to fit your F150 witch should have an inline 6, 302 or 351.
So you'll need another tranny, ZF or Mazda off another truck with those above engines.
What did happen to yours anyways? Did it run out/low on oil?
Either way, on your next one, if you get another M5OD Mazda tranny, before installing it in the truck, heres something you should do, as this is the #1 cause of failure for these trannies.

Those bushings are on top of the tranny shift tower, facing the rear. They are accessible with the tranny installed by removing the floor carpet, and floor hump but since you'll have in hand, be a good idea to do it now.

Not really sure what the cause of the failure is or was. The truck has 143,000 miles on it. Been a daily driver for the past 2 months. Everything semed fine, even drove it on a 2000 mile trip over thanksgiving day weekend. Granted I have not checked the oil in a long time, I haven't noticed any leaks, so I didn't even think about it. Cruising along at 65-70 and a loud "pow thump thump thump" I thought I had dropped a u joint. But after I got back in, started the truck, it ran fine but no gears in 1,2,3 and 5th. I never checked reverse. I had 4th, so I drove home 25 miles in 4th. For the guy that didn't know my details, 1990 f-150 pick up strait 6 4.9L 5 speed. Thanks I'll press on and I'll know more when I take it out.

My best guess is that your problem will be immediately obvious, and as long as you haven't trashed anything else, you can simply replace this assembly.
Of course, if you're looking for an excuse to upgrade to a ZF, feel free to just go ahead and do that.

I could be reading bad sources (or not remembering correctly), but I thought you were supposed to put it in first to align the shift forks?

Indeed those are misguided sources, and I speak from the experience of having followed those bad instructions. If you put it in first and then remove the assembly, when you go to put it back in place, the shifter gets locked in place. Fortunately, it's not difficult to get it back into neutral at that point IF you know the "trick" to doing so. There's a thread with pics and details I posted on this if needed.

You'll first need to upload them to a pic site such as Photobucket. Then you can insert the address of the pic into your message by clicking on the icon above that looks like a mountain with yellow background.
