Penetrating Oil

Penetrating Oil
Thought was interesting...
Interesting! Even if you're not mechanically inclined, this might be worth
noting.
"Machinist's Workshop" recently published information on various penetrating
oils. The magazine reports they tested these products for "break out
"torque" on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular
penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to
remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" bolt.
Average torque load to loosen nut:
No Oil used ........................516 foot pounds
WD-40 ..................... ........238 foot pounds
PB Blaster .........................214 foot pounds
Liquid Wrench ......................127 foot pounds
Kano Kroil .........................106 foot pounds
ATF/Acetone mix...................... 53 foot pounds
The ATF/Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50/50 automatic transmission
fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any
commercial product in this one particular test.
Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with
equally good results. Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good as
Kroil for 20% of the price.
ATF/Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a
50/50 mix. ATF = Any type of Automatic Transmission Fluid
This version of the story was in one of the Military Vehicle Club newsletters.

Thanx for posting those test results. I usually keep some pb blaster. Might re think that.
An old guy that I learned a lot of tricks from made his with kerosene and atf. I use paint thinner (mineral spirits) and atf. Acetone and laq. thinner are pretty volatile, (low flash point), light quick and burn fast.

Thanks a bunch for sharing this! I sure wish I would have known this back when I was trying to loosen my stripped torx plus seat belt to floor pan anchor bolts. That was my worst experience ever with seized bolts. I ended up using MAP gas and a heck of a lot of ingenuity turning it out of it's hole for one in particular bolt.
I will try this in the future for sure.

ATF is one of the best things since the pocket on a shirt. For a penetrating oil, I've always just mixed it with diesel. Seems to work excellent. The nephew was cleaning and re-oiling his high dollar, ceramic ball, saskatchewan seal skin bound, longboard bearings, and I suggested we put a couple drops of Schaeffers in each one instead of the light oil that comes with them. He swears they are faster and now believes this will help him go pro cause of his "secret advantage"... Whatever! long as he's happy!
